A new palliative care service for children and young adults with complex medical needs living in the Northeast is underway with the region’s largest family-owned car dealership organization.
St Oswald’s Hospice this summer created its new nurse-led outreach service to offer home care packages to youth and young adults up to the age of 25.
Service users and their families can benefit from individualized and specialized care in their own home home home environment, which hospice recognizes might be better suited for some young people with complex medical needs.
And now, to help nurses and staff offering the new service travel around the area more smoothly and sustainably, Wingrove Motor Company is building an electric Citroën EC4 that will be available at St Oswald’s Hospice for the next two years.
The new outreach service, which covers an area from Northumberland to Teesside, complements St Oswald’s existing on-site short break care, which has been offered to children and young adults at its hospice in Gosforth for more than 20 years.
It came about as a reaction to recent studies in the fitness sector showing that the number of young people in need of palliative care has tripled in the last 20 years, and aims to provide families with more quality time together by offering the specialized care they need in their homes.
Big sister Rebecca Liddle, who runs the new outreach service alongside her big sister Jessica Carlington, says: “Through the outreach service, we aim to provide consistent, individualized care in the home for youth and young adults with complex needs. of physical conditioning.
“With an ever-increasing demand from children and young adults with complex physical needs, this service can help reduce waiting lists and allow more families in the Northeast to access our specialty care.
“The team is very excited about the prospect of the new service expanding our care delivery to more children, young adults and their families in the Northeast, and although it is still in its infancy, early symptoms are showing a very positive effect. about the families we support.
“We are very grateful to Wingrove for offering us a car. This will have a huge impact on how we can offer our extension centers across the region.
Jane Hogan, Director of Fundraising at St Oswald’s Hospice, adds: “We are very pleased that Wingrove has joined our flock by sponsoring a sculpture of Shaun on the Tyne from our summer fundraising art adventure, and now that the adventure is complete, we are delighted to continue our collaboration with his team.
“The car they kindly provided to us will be a component of our outreach service and we are very grateful for their support. “
Wingrove Motor Company operates the official North East franchises for the global Citroën, Peugeot and DS brands, and employs around 85 more people at its dealerships and service centres in Silverlink, Newcastle West Road and Cramlington.
Executive Director Josh Parker says, “St Oswald’s Hospice is making an incalculable difference in the lives of many families across the North East as they face some of the greatest challenges imaginable.
“None of us know when we might need the help of the amazing team at Hospice and we are incredibly excited to continue our appointments through this invaluable new service. “
