The ATV is exploding. The use of trails is expanding and sales of mountain motorcycles are expanding. But no box is developing more than in the global conversion of electric mountain motorcycles.
While the pandemic attracted other people outdoors for recreation, cycling in all spaces has increased dramatically. In recent months, according to NPD Group’s DATA, high-end motorcycles have experienced the biggest bump, largely due to others who already care about mountain biking and are looking to modernize. No field, however, is experiencing an increase like electric bikes, adding up mountain electric bikes, with a more than 200% increase in sales figures this year compared to last year. And more than 25% of all cash spent on mountain motorcycles in 2020 electric motorcycle type.
Specialized, one of the “big three” in the mountain biking world, was one of the first to introduce electric motorcycles into the mountain range, combining engineering offices in California and Switzerland to continue creating. “If you like riding a motorcycle, you’re probably going through really enjoying riding an electric motorcycle,” Kenny says. “It allows you to do more of the type of driving you like.” In mountain biking, the electric motorcycle assists pedaling, doubling or quadrupling pedal strength when pedaling on a hill, giving cyclists the time and endurance to travel more trails or pass further. The electric motorcycle also gives the option to more remote roads.
The electric motorcycle does not take away the effort of the adventure, however, partly the design of the assistance to pedaling and partly the nature of electric motorcycles. “On average, other people who drive electric motorcycles do more exercise,” Kenny says, “they drive further and further. For new riders, electric motorcycles have the incredible effect of leaving a positive impression of their driving right away. The Turbo Levo, which remains one of the highest rated mountain electric motorcycles on the market, was originally introduced in 2015 and has undergone several iterations, perfecting the formula to improve voltage integration and mitigation. Specialized will now be offering a diversity of electric Turbo ATVs to be offering other types based on trails, such as the Levo with more force or the Levo SL with a lighter and more agile touch. Motorcycles meet mountain expectations such as 150mm travel, and the Levo SL weighs 38 pounds, the lightest in its elegance and 240 watts of driving force amplification resulting in an assist of up to 20 miles consistent with the hour while customizing force delivery. Turbo Levo and Turbo Kenevo versions come with 565 watts of force.
Specialized has done this internally (many corporations outsource electrical motorcycle factors) so they can control each and every step of the process, adding hardware and software. “That’s what allows us to take motorcycles to motorcyclists who can’t locate anywhere else,” Kenny says. “It’s the difference between taking portions and factors commercially and assembling them and creating this fluid, fluid, and consistent delight. It is a complex device that requires a lot of engineering and paints to create a delight that looks wonderful and when you assemble it, you feel the difference.
The evolution of the software has been reflected in the expansion of the Turbo Mountain power line. In order to create a fluid and surge-free support, Specialized has extracted knowledge of millions of kilometers of trails on its motorcycles to refine the software. But they also optimized the hardware. Specialized has adjusted the power of the battery, based on knowledge, to offer precisely what cyclists want so that they can reduce weight and refine the feeling, wrapping it in a true mountain motorcycle design for punishment on the trails.
While the world of electric motorcycles is still relatively young and the area of electric mountain motorcycles is even newer, Kenny says it reminds him of the beginnings of Tesla, where one thing is for generation and another to delight. Today, however, experiments with electric mountain motorcycles are conducted at a much faster rate.
