Skoda’s new CEO is Thomas Schofer, former director of VW South Africa Group

Skoda has appointed a new CEO to upgrade Bernhard Maier and his is Thomas Schofer, former president of the Volkswagen South Africa Group.

Thomas, who takes over as chairman of Skoda Auto’s board of directors quickly, has been at Volkswagen AG since May 2012, where he led the group’s foreign production and was responsible for xKD projects and negotiations at new production sites.

Since 2015, he has been president and chief executive of the Volkswagen South Africa Group, for the progression of the Group’s brands in the sub-Saharan Africa region. During his time there, he brought the advertising vehicle brands Volkswagen, Audi and VW to the record market share of 23.5%.

He also oversaw the progression of the Volkswagen Group and the consolidation of its position in sub-Saharan Africa. The company has built new production sites, signed new cooperation agreements with importers and has evolved mobility for Kenya, Nigeria, Rwanda and Ghana.

Prior to joining Volkswagen AG in 2012, he worked for Daimler AG, where he began his career in the automotive industry in 1991 as a qualified mechanical engineer. Until 2002, he held leadership positions in the production and quality control fields in Germany, the United States and South Africa. From 2002 to 2005, he was a founding member of DaimlerChrysler Malaysia as a member of the Technology Board, where he expanded and restructured the company’s sales, production and supplier base.

From 2005 to 2012, he worked for Daimler AG in Germany, where he was guilty of vehicle deliveries, visitor centers and the global xKD business in emerging markets. His daily work included the installation of new plants, the development of plans and strategies, as well as foreign logistics for all foreign plants. In 2011, his main daily tasks were to manage the assignment of the Structure of the Mercedes-Benz plant in cooperation with BAIC in China.

At the moment, little is known about Skoda’s plans. According to the unions, historically strong in Skoda Auto, it is known what his appointment to the management of the Czech car manufacturer will mean.
