Oct. 26 – GREENSBURG – Fifty-two more people in 32 cars from across the state of Indiana, driving the Chevy Corvette of their dreams, gathered Friday night for a locally generated event that captured the attention and enthusiasm of gearboxes around the world, the Simply Corvette. Backroad Boogie.
With some arriving Friday night and staying at the Hampton Inn, the organization rose early Saturday to leisurely ride the winding back roads of southeast Indana, enjoying the colors of fall and communicating with other Corvette enthusiasts from as far away as Chicago.
Planning for the occasion began in late 2021, on the heels of two other occasions that drew overwhelming worldwide attention from a guy who simply does it for the love of the sport.
“Simply Corvettes” is a Facebook page that, just a few years ago, was a site to share images and encourage conversations with other Corvette lovers. Today, this page has more than 23,000 members from as far away as England.
Greensburg local Brian Wyatt has enjoyed Corvettes for many years and his fondness for the logo was a fluke.
Wyatt drives a bright red C5 convertible (that’s the taste of his car’s structure: there have been 8 main tastes of the Chevrolet structure since the Corvette craze began in the mid-60s). Although he’s familiar with auto mechanics and mechanics (his career since industry school), he admits he never paid attention to the Corvette until he discovered one on Facebook MarketPlace.
“He bequeathed it (to the former owner) through his late father’s most productive friend, and put it up for sale at the right price,” Wyatt said. “So I went there, passed him the cash and brought him home. “
As for repairs, he replaced the oil shipping unit in the engine and that’s it.
“It was a smart car in driving condition when I bought it,” he said.
Starting from the Hampton Inn and picking up a few along the way, 32 Corvettes of all colors and frame styles made their way to Decatur County’s well-known Round Barn on Moscow Road north of Greensburg. After the conversation, photographs, and tours of the barns were over, the organization took off throughout the spaces of southeastern Indiana, making sure to pass through several historic covered bridges built by Kennedy between Greensburg and Metamora.
Spending an hour in Metamora and then heading to Laurel for lunch, they took separate routes back to the Hampton Inn at 7:30 p. m.
The Simply Corvette Club sponsors similar events throughout the year and the club is free.
As for the story of why the Corvette craze is big enough to motivate multi-state bankruptcy clubs, Wyatt explained, “The strength and handling of a sports car for sports enthusiasts is like nowhere else in the world. “
