A 12-year-old boy from Shawnee is hailed as a hero after driving 3 kilometers down the highway in the afternoon to ask for help from his stepfather, who was seriously injured in a car accident.
Jordan Gardner and his father-in-law, Devin Gardner, were headed to Alabama when their fate took a serious turn on Interstate 40 in Arkansas.
After the collision, Jordan, who has autism and speech aphasia, abandoned the crashed vehicle and walked down the road in search of help.
Deputy James Graves of the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office was dispatched after a call reporting a child walking on the road. After locating Jordan, Graves noticed that the boy was frantic and had difficulty communicating.
“He had some communication issues and it took us a minute to figure out what was wrong,” Graves said.
Jordan told deputies that his father didn’t notice when he got out of the vehicle.
“Was your father awake when you left?” Graves, he asked Jordan. The boy replied, ‘No, he’s dead. ‘”
While Officer Kendall Smith was investigating the scene of the accident, the dispatcher informed him that the vehicle had crashed into a guardrail.
Smith discovered the wrecked and, moments later, heard Devin Gardner’s cries for help.
“As soon as I stopped, I heard a cry for help. I was like, he’s okay, he’s alive. I was definitely relieved,” Smith said.
Devin Gardner found him seriously injured but alive.
The rear windshield of the vehicle was shattered, the trunk was shattered and the driver’s appearance was particularly damaged.
“The fact that the child crawled out and the father was still alive is nothing short of a miracle,” Smith said.
Jordan, who crossed four lanes of traffic at night to signal vehicles, was left with minimal injuries.
“I’m going to do it for a long time,” Graves said. “He’s brave. “
Devin Gardner is expected to leave the hospital and check into a rehabilitation facility in the coming days.
The cause of the twist of fate is still under investigation.
