McLaren has undercover Paul di Resta as a reserve driving force for this weekend’s 70th anniversary Grand Prix due to disruptions with his original reserve driving forces.
Like Racing Point, McLaren has reached an agreement with Mercedes to use any of its backup drivers if necessary, as the protective champions have Stoffel Vandoorne and Esteban Gutierrez on the list. However, Vandoorne lately cannot be updated due to the matchups with the latest of the six-race Formula E season in Berlin, and the recent scenario surrounding Sergio Perez has highlighted the fact that Gutierrez recently holds an FIA Super License.
Racing Point has selected to upgrade Perez, who tested positive for COVID-19 last week, with Nico Hulkenberg at the British Grand Prix last weekend and will return to the German if Perez is not allowed to resume racing on time for the time being. Silverstone McLaren had to establish the rescue driving force and turned to the former forceability Force India di Resta.
The Scot will be present at Silverstone from his role as an expert and commentator of Sky Sports, however, he went to the McLaren Technology Center for a seat adjustment and followed all the COVID protocols necessary to compete if necessary.
A McLaren spokesman said that di Resta “will not be in close contact with McLaren’s racing team unless necessary,” as his own are only needed if Carlos Sainz or Lando Norris cannot drive.
