On Friday, a new initiative was unveiled for protecting motorcycle deliveries and fighting the emerging number of cyclist deaths nationwide.
The Governor’s Highway Safety Association (GHSA), a nonprofit organization representing the state’s highway protection offices, and Uber Eats, the online food ordering and delivery platform, have teamed up to create a series of tips for all bicyclists to get to their destination safely.
“Bicyclist deaths were 9 percent higher in 2017 than in 2008,” Jonathan Adkins, GHSA’s executive director, said in a statement. in 2018.
The 8 protection tips were based on interviews with delivery partners working with Uber Eats and evolved through the GHSA. They tackle vital issues, adding everything from fitting well to the helmet and bike, keeping the handlebars hooked and being more visual to others on the road.
The tips were announced through either team at a meeting of motorcycle delivery partners for Uber Eats on Friday in New York City, and will be rolled out on occasion in the platform’s major online food ordering and delivery marketplaces across the country (Chicago, Miami, San Francisco and Los Angeles) in the coming weeks.
Uber Eats will also make the recommendation through its app and website, according to the agreement.
“This public-private partnership is a unique way to teach cyclists of all stripes about tough measures, not just delivery partners, when riding on shared roads with motor vehicles,” added Adkins, who participated in the first implementation in New York City. .
The initiative, he said, also serves as a reminder “that cyclists have the right to the road” and that all road users will have to respect and protect each other.
