Over the years, there have been many romantic comedies based on the William Shakespeare plays we know and love, among 10 things I hate about you, She’s the Man or Yes, Baz Luhrmann’s Romeo Juliet with Leonardo DiCaprio. returns for more and does so with the launch of Hulu, Rosaline, a spin-off of Romeo and Juliet from the point of view of Romeo’s ex. But Kyle Allen’s own concept for the celebrated play is inspired.
When CinemaBlend spoke with actress Rosaline, who plays Romeo in this new edition of the story, Kyle Allen shared that filming, he came up with an idea of choice for the iconic romance. In his words:
I think it was discussed for a long time on set that I wish there was a derivative romance between Romeo and Dario. I feel like anyone can fall in love with Dario and Romeo falls in love with everybody, so I think they would have a wonderful bromance.
Romeo and Juliet have been around for more than 400 years, but it’s still a natural and simple love story. In Rosaline, Kyle Allen plays a Romeo who temporarily falls in love with everyone and would have liked to see him have a queer romance with Sean. Teale’s Dario. Teale also on the idea, saying this:
I would like to. We were so excited when we met on set. We thought, we have a moment to do anything and we would end up all summer together. We did a lot of old tours together. We spend a lot of time researching, because being with Kyle is a very busy day. But, Kyle and I had time and we literally developed a bromance, so I thought, what a disgrace we let Rosaline get in our way. smart weather. So I’d gladly do a spin-off as long as [Kaitlyn Dever] can also do more. We have a moment at the end of the movie where he tries to communicate with me, and that’s the most we have. And that’s the only thing we have and it’s pretty special for any of us. I’d love to do that with Kyle. Anything with Kyle would be great.
It turns out that Kyle Allen and Sean Teale got along well on set and had a palpable chemistry in genuine life, generating this original concept for a Romeo and Juliet spin-off. And hey, if two men in ancient times fell in love, it can be quite similar to the story of Romeo and Juliet in that it would not have been accepted without problems by any of their families and could even have ended in tragedy.
The ancient Star Lovers story itself turns out to be a position to be told in a strange way, but we would definitely prefer it to be an LGBTQ romantic comedy for a satisfying ending. In the past, when those plays were directed only by male actors, Romeo and Juliet were two men who fell in love under those whimsical costumes.
At the end of Rosaline, the twist of the old work sees Romeo and Juliet faking their death and leaving at sunset to realize they might not have much in common, while Rosaline gets a satisfied ending by locating Dario. If only Rosaline made Romeo a bisexual character, because that would make a lot of sense, but in any case, Kyle Allen has a fabulous idea to get around Shakespeare’s story.
