While Richard Hammond, 50, landed his role as a top gear co-host alongside 60-year-old Jeremy Clarkson and 57-year-old James May in 2002, the host revealed that he felt “pretty sad” after his initial audition. The Grand Tour star spoke about the main points about the interview process, recalling the moment he met the bosses and Jeremy himself.
Richard explained what he had done to audition for the BBC’s car show in a new interview with DriveTribe.
After asking the TV presenter how he got his role as a presenter 18 years ago, he leaked: “I met Jeremy and Richard Porter [the BBC and Top Gear writer] and Andy Wilman [former producer] and I had to do a play with Jeremy and a piece on camera in a car.
“And I went home pretty unhappy because I think this exhibition is going to be amazing,” he revealed.
“They’re going to have a time and I’m not going to be a part of it because I’m not going to get the job.”

Richard then explained what when the bosses contacted him “months” after his first meeting.
Then the months passed, the phone rang and we were in a small basement of our small space in Cheltenham.
Mindy was with me, my wife, and I said, ‘It’s them.’ And that was the case and they said, “Would you like to sign up for us?”
“Then I burst into tears and opened a bottle of champagne,” which led him to laugh before adding, “That’s the real truth.”
Richard, James and Jeremy left Top Gear in 2015 before starting to offer The Grand Tour in combination the following year.
On the other hand, Richard recently talked about the lack of paintings with one of his favorite Top Gear partners in a “new show”.
The reporter talked about his plans for one of his highest vehicles, his Opel Kadett, which he calls Oliver.
The TV presenter fell in love with his Opel in the special episode of Top Gear in Botswana.

Later in the same video, Richard revealed, “I’m asked if I have any plans for Oliver.
“I mean, I have that, he.
I said, “Yes. One day, maybe, I’d like to do a program, use it for as many other things as possible. We were talking about it the day, me and the boys,” he added.
The star then admitted how he would modify his trusted car: “I’d like to take it to a level rally, take it to drag races, take it to run on the track, but in all cases, strongly customize the car to do so.” because it’s going to be Oliver.
“I’m going to drop a small V8 block for a while. This will raise doubts about the rest of the transmission and the transmission industry.”
Richard then revealed, “Yes, it’s going to be shattered, so I’d like some new ones underneath, but I’d love to meet him through developments, I think it might be fun.”
The presenter then asked his enthusiasts to tell him his comments and whether they would be interested in his idea.
“Maybe you’ll just let us know if you think it’s a smart concept and it’s anything we can do.
