The first thing you notice about the new street style of Rad Power Bikes are the huge tires, the semi-integrated battery or the sleek display. When you’re riding a bike, the first thing you see are several warnings on the down tube. “Minimum operator age of 16 or older,” it says. This reminds us that several years ago, a 12-year-old boy died because he couldn’t stop a Rad Power Bike from entering an intersection.
Rad Power Bikes, one of the first brands to mass-market a direct-to-consumer electric motorcycle. It’s hard to be the first to do something. You can’t know what you don’t know. Now, Rad Power Bikes knows that I want to explicitly tell parents not to allow young people to ride rugged vehicles. I also have a bit more experience from the days when it took me 3 days to put together a motorcycle and Rad Power Bikes seemed to be fighting lawsuits all over the place. The company now has a new CEO and has reshuffled its priorities. Safety is the most sensible priority, and like many other electric motorcycles, all of Rad’s newest motorcycles and batteries are UL qualified to meet existing protection standards.
The Radster Road is one of the few new Rads introduced this year and I must say I like it. It’s designed for comfortable and convenient long-distance travel, and it delivers on that promise. For the past few weeks, it’s the bike I automatically use when I’m late, when I drop my kids off at school, or when I meet my friends at the movies, and it’s moderately priced for most of that. You can’t ask for much more from an electric motorcycle.
Rad has created some ambitious options with the Radster Road. For example, many electric motorcycles now have small wheels. Big wheels overcome obstacles more easily and are more efficient, but the power is less when you have an engine powering your motorcycle. than your legs. Smaller wheels are lighter in the box and less difficult to handle. Unlike the RadRunner’s 26-inches, the Radster Road is supplied with huge 29-inch Kenda tires that seem better suited for long-distance rides than school. children.

Although it’s difficult to maneuver 29-inch wheels through a crowd of kindergartners on their way to the bike rack, it’s hard to argue with their benefits. I can see how much less force it consumes when I’m at the first point of lending a hand and pedaling, compared to using the throttle on a partial lap (8 watts vs. 720 total watts, for example). This helps to significantly extend the life of the battery. I’ve got about 30 miles on the clock and the battery still has some capacity, besides me, I’ve been running errands and 27-pound bags of dog food with it.
Another word about the battery: the Radster Road has a new generation now called the Safe Shield. In addition to being UL certified, the battery cells are now separately encapsulated in a heat-absorbing resin, so that in the (unlikely!) case of a fire battery, it remains localized and goes out. This is the same generation discovered in an electric car battery, intended to fight last year’s series of battery fires.
It’s also semi-built-in, which might sound strange. It sits on the border between a sleek, fully built-in battery inside the frame and a convenient battery that you can remove if you don’t need to charge your motorcycle outside. That looks good. Honestly, I like Safe Shield a lot better than this battery design.
My test model was the Radster Road with the popular aluminum frame size, which comes in an excellent blue frame that fits my 5’2″ height perfectly. It looks like a frame with an upright seat, but you lean forward in a sportier position. It has an IPX6-rated 750-watt rear hub motor and a proprietary 720Wh battery, which means it’s waterproof and can even withstand submersion (I’m forced not to overtake it).

There are 8 speeds, five degrees of assist, a rotary throttle and a 0 assist mode. Rad now has a new torque sensor that makes you feel infinitely better and pedal much more naturally. It’s also much quieter. In the past I had placed Lectric motorcycles in a similar category of affordable direct-to-consumer pricing, however, my husband rides a Lectric and got angry when he found out how sleek and quiet it pedaled, while buzzing.
It also comes with hydraulic disc brakes, front suspension with 80 millimeters of (feels good!it feels comfortable!) and a bunch of features that make it seem a lot more expensive than it actually is. For example, you may have noticed that he didn’t mention how elegant an electric motorcycle it is. Although it comes as a Class 2 electric motorcycle, you can scroll through the menu and replace the elegance it’s in, and therefore the legal top speed, depending on whether you’re in the village or the countryside. It’s really cool. In the menu, you can also perform operations such as clearing vacation knowledge or setting a password to lock the screen.
There’s also a bell! What other people I know have reported is that every once in a while I turn the sign on and off it, or accidentally turn it on when I replace assists, and then my hand flies to the point where I’m automatically directed because I’ve been making arm signals for 30 years. It’s fun. Instead of turn signals, I would have liked a brighter headlight. Two hundred lumens is brighter than turning on the headlight, but I’d actually prefer 400 or even 1000 when I’m cycling at night in the rain, which I do occasionally.
Exclusive accessories are one of the main reasons why other people buy motorcycles directly from the consumer. Cars don’t ship without lighting or garage options, so replacement cars will need to have them as well. The Radster Road comes with fenders, a chain guard, and a rear rack with a payload of 55 pounds. It fits my Po Campo backpack without any problems. Compared to other direct-to-consumer sales, Rad Power Bikes offers a huge diversity of accessories; I’d be remiss if I didn’t admit that, while riding my motorcycle with my kids and wife, it occurred to me to install a lockable garage and puppy trailer so my senior dog can accompany me as well.
I think $2000 is the ideal value for an electric commuter motorcycle. That’s enough to cover some very strong components, but it’s not so expensive that it deters you from riding a motorcycle because you’re afraid it will be stolen or damaged. It fits regular bike racks really well and I can use a regular U-lock on the head tube, I felt more comfortable locking it twice on multiple parts of the frame. Unlike the Santa Cruz Skitch (9/10, recommended WIRED), I took the Radster Road and jumped on it when I had to run to the grocery store. Not every trip has to be so fun that you can’t help but laugh. Sometimes you just want to go somewhere, you hate parking your car, and you’re too late.
For many years I was wary of Rad Power Bikes – it’s hard for a hardware tester to separate things like a motorcycle’s bow or lawsuits. However, it is evident that many classes have been learned in recent years. Radster Road not so well, for miles and miles.
