Whether you’re a racer or a customer, the used car aftermarket is what most motorists will have to turn to in their lives.
For some, that means spending a few dollars on something small, like a new wiper blade, but in many cases the bill can run into the tens of thousands.
One of the largest marketplaces for used car parts is eBay, in which millions of pounds are moved every year.
The company has now unveiled the most expensive units and accessories sold on its platform in the first six months of this year, with functional engines, carbon fiber units and exclusive license plates all in the top 10.
When it comes to the most important purchases, the three most sensible places on the list belong to the functional car sector.
In first position is an Audi R8 5. 2 V10 petrol engine, acquired for £16,567, after travelling more than 38,500 miles.
The lot followed in second and third position with two sets of carbon Porsche bucket seats, the first pair for a £13,085 911 GT3 and the second for the smaller Cayman GT4 at £11,962.
Meanwhile, the fourth position is a battery for a Tesla Model S, which charges a customer £8,606, a massive reduction in the value of a new Tesla battery with the logo.
Continuing with the Tesla theme, the fifth position is obtained thanks to the exclusive personal license plate ‘ELON X’, which charges a bettor £ 8,606.
Another traditional registration number, ‘DIESEL’, also in the top 10, sells for £8,135.
Elsewhere, the most Ferrari-related item was not an engine or a carbon fiber frame piece, but a complete set of bespoke luggage for the vintage 512TR supercar, which costs £8,518.
Commenting on the findings, Laura Richards, category manager for auto parts and accessories at eBay, said: “Like many eBay users, we are enthusiasts at heart.
“We see some amazing listings posted and then sold on eBay; It is attractive to see what is promoted on the site.
“With tens of millions of auto parts and accessories available, from commodities like tires and oil to the specialized, high-performance parts you see listed, eBay is an ideal one-stop solution for you. Our consumers locate the parts and accessories they want for their vehicles.
