TOKYO (AP) – The opposite case of former Nissan executive Carlos Ghosn would possibly have taken a turn when Japanese media reported accusations that the automaker reported spending 1.150 million yen ($10.8 million) on its non-taxable non-public revenue.
Japan’s National Tax Agency said Thursday that, aware of the reports, it declined to comment on an individual case.
Nissan Motor Co. showed that he had won a tax investigation from the Japanese authorities.
“Nissan has won a reassessment of the government and will respond appropriately. We’ll talk more,” the Japanese manufacturer said in a statement.
Ghosn’s spokesman did not respond to a request for comment.
Reports from Yomiuri National Newspaper and Kyodo Press Service imply that the cash reported for Nissan’s expenses was in fact used for non-public Ghosn purposes, such as the use of a commercial aircraft and homes in Tokyo and elsewhere.
These expenditures included one billion yen ($9.4 million) over the years through March 2019 and 150 million yen ($1.4 million) for 3 years earlier, reportedly.
Ghosn was arrested in Japan in 2018 and was awaiting trial for failing to report on the long-term source of income and failure to accept it as true when he resigned his bail and escaped to Lebanon late last year. Brazilian-born French nationality.
Ghosn continually stated that he was innocent, that the cash had never been paid or paid, and that the invoices were legitimate. He says the accusations were fabricated through those seeking to block Nissan’s merger plans with the Renault alliance’s spouse in France. Ghosn said he escaped because he thought he may not have a fair trial in Japan, where the conviction rate in trials for criminals exceeds 99%.
Japan is the extradition of two Americans accused of helping Ghosn escape to Lebanon. Ghosn cannot be extradited so easily because Japan does not have an extradition treaty with Lebanon.
The trial of another former Nissan executive, Greg Kelly, who was arrested with Ghosn, is expected to begin next month. Kelly, an American, is released on bail in Japan and has continually insisted on his innocence.
