After a mid-June arrest, the New York Giants are expected to release kicker Aldrick Rosas, according to multiple Sunday morning reports. NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo and Ian Rapoport first reported the news.
Rosas, 25, was arrested June 16 in his native Chico, California, after an alleged hit-and-run accident. TMZ Sports reported, citing law enforcement, that witnesses saw a black Chevrolet SUV driven by Rosas driving erratically at approximately 100 MPH when he failed to stop for a red light.
Rosas then T-Boned a pickup truck that was crossing the intersection, but he continued to drive through the accident, even though his car broke down shortly afterwards. He then proceeded to get out of his car and flee the scene.
Rosas was eventually found walking near the site of the crash, with his hands, legs, and bare feet reportedly covered in blood. Rosas admitted he was the registered owner of the SUV, and was taken to a local medical center for evaluation before being booked at the Butte County (Calif.) Jail on charges of hit-and-run and driving on a suspended license. Police also believe that alcohol impairment was a factor in the crash.
“We are aware of the situation and have been in contact with Aldrick,” read a statement by the Giants to Ralph Vacchiano of SNY. “We have no further comment at this time.”
Rosas, an undrafted free agent out of Southern Oregon in 2016, has been the Giants’ kicker since 2017 with mixed results. In 2018, after successfully making 32 of 33 field goals and 31 of 32 extra point attempts, Rosas was named both a Pro Bowler and a member of the All-Pro second team for the first time in his career.
However, the 2019 season saw a regression in his performance. He made just 12 of 17 field goal attempts while also missing 4 of 39 extra point attempts.
Part of Rosas’ issues were attributed to the struggles of longtime Giants long snapper Zak DeOssie, who labored through knee and wrist injuries before finally landing on injured reserve in what turned out to be his final season with the team.
It has also since come to light that Rosas’ arrest was not his first in recent years. According to Zack Rosenblatt of NJ.com, Rosas was previously arrested and charged with driving under the influence in 2016, an incident which occurred 20 miles west of Chico in Orland, California.
