The Pajaro Valley Unified School District Board of Trustees on Wednesday unanimously approved a three-year contract for its new superintendent.
Heather Contreras’ contract has a start date of May 1. His base salary will be $242,000 consistent with the year, with a 2% increase after one year, pending a positive evaluation.
You’ll get the same package as other workers in the district, plus a $600 stipend for a vehicle, as well as a stipend for your Ph. D.
Acosta said the appointment required “many” meetings to find, vet and hire Contreras.
To a packed room, Contreras said his leadership philosophy is based on the concept of “connection, collaboration and community. “
Contreras said she plans to spend her first few weeks on a district-wide “observe, listen and learn” adventure to meet with students, families, network members, school workers and teachers.
“I’m keeping an eye on this, I feel like Monday was a smart start and thank you for your time and all the power you put into locating your next superintendent,” he said.
Her appointment follows Modesto City Schools, where she has worked as Deputy Superintendent of School Management for more than four years.
Her experience includes training at the elementary, secondary, and high school levels, as an administrator in several schools, and leading district offices for the more than seven years.
He has taught at the school level, teachers for their administrative careers. He also presents in doctoral programs, Acosta said.
Contreras is a member of the California Educational Partners Collaborative, a network of educators who examine replacement concepts around student outcomes.
The superintendent career opened up in June, when Michelle Rodriguez announced her departure.
Only three other people spoke during the public comment session, all in support of Contreras’ contract.
Pajaro Valley Federation of Teachers President Nelly Vaquera-Boggs said that during the site visit, she “rushed” to reach out to as many other people as possible to get a sense of Contreras’ leadership and listened to intelligent reports.
“We’re pleased with what we heard,” he said.
And then, speaking directly to Contreras, Vaquera-Boggs added, “We’re ahead to run with you, because there’s a lot of painting to be done in this neighborhood. “
Administrator Oscar Soto echoed the sentiments related to Modesto.
“The position is well managed,” he said. It’s close surveillance and I hope to bring that ideology to this community once I pass by and start to see our amenities and how they are maintained. As the Board of Directors, we have been tasked with locating it over the past few months. And I think we’ve done well and we all agree.
Contreras inherits a district facing a decline in its earnings due to a decline in enrollment that is expected to continue into the future.
Over the past decade, PVUSD has lost approximately 3,000 students, from 18,368 in 2013-2014 to the year it had 15,920.
This is a challenge when 65% of school districts’ profits come from per-student funding, also known as average attendance.
Given that students contribute more than $14,000 in average daily attendance funds, wasting 120 scholars would mean an annual loss of $1. 6 million.
