WEST LAFAYETTE – A Purdue University invention that can reduce the time and money spent building and repairing concrete road surfaces and other structures has been identified as an Edison Prize Gold Winner in the Critical Human Infrastructure category.
The Edison Awards, considered the “Oscars of innovation,” are given annually to “recognize the perseverance and excellence that also characterized Thomas Edison’s work. “Previous winners of this award include Honeywell, GoPro, General Motors, and 3M. revered Thursday, April 18, at the 2024 Edison Awards rite in Fort Myers, Florida.
Sensors embedded in newly poured concrete are revealed that can measure the strength grades of concrete in real time, indicating when the road pavement is strong enough for traffic. These sensors are also being tested and evolved for use on bridges, airport runways, and buildings all the way through. You want for maintenance and speed up structure times.
Luna Lu, the Reilly Professor of Civil Engineering at Purdue, has been leading the progression of sensor generation since 2017. This innovation hit the market on December 1, 2023, the so-called REBEL Concrete Resistance Detection System, a product of Wavelogix. Lu, the CEO of Wavelogix, founded the startup in 2021.
According to the Federal Highway Administration, concrete pavements account for less than 2% of U. S. roads. But about 20% of the U. S. interstate network is not the same. U. S. Although interstate concrete sidewalks make up much of the nation’s traffic, the structure of the roads has led to traffic congestion that wastes four billion hours. and 3 billion gallons of gasoline per year.
The REBEL Concrete Strength Detection System has the potential to minimize the frequency of concrete pavement maintenance and allow roads to open faster after a new pour by offering a greater understanding of the degrees of strength of concrete and what it should be like to determine when the pavement is strong enough to cope with heavy traffic.
This sensor formula may be the most effective choice for concrete strength tests that have been used for over a hundred years. Engineers would no longer want to check giant concrete samples in a lab or on-site to estimate the strength point of a concrete harvester will reach its target after it has been poured and allowed to mature. Instead, those sensors would be placed on a concrete pouring and connected to a handheld device that records concrete strength data, allowing new concrete and several of them to be directly monitored. their houses are as they should be measured at once.
This generation’s roads and bridges can last longer, with additional repairs, traffic caused by the repairs, and millions of taxpayer dollars spent on repairs. Reducing traffic would also reduce the carbon dioxide emissions that cars would have emitted while waiting to drive around a structure’s site. By reducing road repairs, generation has the potential to reduce one billion tons of carbon emissions globally by reducing the presence of cement in concrete mixes by up to 20%.
The sensor formula has already gained prestigious popularity on TIME’s list of 2023 inventions. In addition, Fast Company magazine named this invention as one of its next big technological breakthroughs for 2022, and the American Society of Civil Engineers’ 2021 report on U. S. infrastructure called it one of the inventions. The U. S. government decided on the generation as one of the “game changers” of the year.
More than a portion of U. S. states have been affected by the U. S. Some U. S. cities with concrete interstate sidewalks are recently participating in a Federal Highway Administration study to implement the sensor system, including Indiana, Missouri, North Dakota, Kansas, California, Texas, Tennessee, Colorado and Utah. In 2023, the sensors were added to the future junction of I-465 with I-69 south on the south side of Indianapolis.
Wavelogix licenses this innovation to Purdue Innovates’ Office of Technology Commercialization, which has implemented patent coverage in intellectual property.
