Opel’s history in Australia is a history of diversity, involving a challenging diversity of cars and a cohort of absolutely distant car buyers. It’s no wonder that the logo packed its bags and disappeared from this country after only about a year. The real mystery is why Opel got upset when it had already been established that Australians didn’t need the product, even with a Holden badge. I have a question for you, David: is the car a personal import from Britain?I ask the question because you indicated the distance travelled in miles and the Opel Astra was only sold in Australia in September 2012, whereas you say the car in question is a 2011 model.
In any case, the Astra we bought in 2012 was an attractive car and drove quite well, but it wasn’t adapted to Australian conditions. Many of them suffered from water pump failures which, in our climate, caused the engine to temporarily overheat. The 1. 4-litre turbocharged petrol engine also had a bit of punch in terms of power and the turbo formula can simply increase leakage. There was also a big challenge with the failures in the manual transmission, the first sign of which is a whimper coming from the gearbox. Oh, and the car was also involved in the Takata airbag fiasco.
