Porsche has revealed all the main points of its upcoming Porsche Macan EV, the first to run on the brand’s newest premium electric platform (PPE) and a vehicle that the German functional automaker says will be “the sportiest styling in its segment. “It also offers “high degrees of practicality. “
Although it is Taycan Porsche’s first (and very successful) foray into electrification, the Macan EV is undoubtedly the most important vehicle. It’s priced at £69,800 / €84,100 (around $88,900 / AU$135,000) for the Macan 4, with the beefier Turbo engine. models costing £95,000 / AU$114,600 (around AU$121,000 / AU$184,000). And the electrified SUV joins the ranks of the world’s best-selling Porsche bodies alongside the Macan and Cayenne.
Since 2014, Porsche has delivered more than 800,000 sets of its small SUV worldwide, and the luck of its new model is surely critical for Porsche to reach its electrification goal and fortunately sell 80% of its model lineup until 2030.
To do this, it has created an electric vehicle that is excellent in any scenario: all four models of the Macan are capable of accelerating from idle to 100 km/h in just 5. 2 seconds (the Turbo reduces that speed to 3. 3 seconds). , while offering top speeds of 220 km/h and 161 mph respectively.
The 800V architecture is paired with a 100kWh lithium-ion battery under the body. Up to 95 kWh can be actively used, which equates to a combined WLTP diversity of up to 600 kilometres for the Macan four and 600 kilometres for the Turbo.
Both models are supplied with two permanently excited PSM electric motors fixed on each axle, which not only provides the Macan EV with exceptional straight-line performance, but also allows it to venture off-road, thanks to custom driving modes.
During our ride in one of the first prototypes, we experienced the dizzying acceleration that Turbo offers on the track (thanks to launch), as well as the Macan EV’s ability to splash, climb, and glide neatly through muddy terrain.
The Taycan’s standout 800V architecture also allows for faster charging speeds; Porsche claims that its new Macan can make do with DC charging inputs of up to 270 kW. Thanks to this, the battery can be charged from 10 to 80% in about 21 minutes at a suitable fast charging station.
If sub-400-volt charging stations are the only option, a high-voltage transfer in the battery allows for bank charging by dividing the 800-volt battery well in half, with a voltage score of 400 volts for more effective and faster use-UPS.
Although the infotainment setup looks alarmingly similar to that found in the existing Taycan (as well as the upcoming Panamera), Porsche is introducing an entirely new operating formula powered through Android Automotive that makes the human-machine interface much more intuitive. Faster and more efficient.
The Macan EV can be specified with up to 3 displays: a separate 12. 6-inch tool cluster with a curved design, a 10. 9-inch central display and an optional display for the third passenger, measuring 10. 9 inches.
As we mentioned in our early hands-on with a prototype infotainment system in the marque’s Leipzig facility, Porsche has ensured it is lightning fast, able to deal with complex routing requests, including bespoke charging requirements, in milliseconds.
The Android Automotive OS also means users have access to much of the Google Play store, with the ability to download apps, games and favorite streaming services. The optional third passenger screen features a special coating so the driver isn’t distracted by whatever the front passenger is bingeing.
Finally, Porsche brought the latest augmented reality demonstration in the Macan EV, which virtually broadcasts on the road to aid navigation and safety warnings.
The arrows now flash, while the virtual lane markings keep the driver in the correct lane. According to Porsche, the symbol appears in front of the driver at a distance of 10 meters and corresponds to the length of an 87-inch screen. We tested it on a Panamera prototype and found it to be really useful, if oddly unobtrusive.
While the Macan EV is an excursion of technological strength, it has also been designed with formidable Porsche functionality built into its DNA. It slides, drifts, and attacks a race track like a possessed vehicle, but it can also make a foray into off-roading. -Territory of the road. Porsche rarely does things by halves.
“Thanks to its sporty seating position and low centre of gravity, as well as its impressive driving dynamics and steering precision, the new Macan conveys a real sports car feel,” explains Jörg Kerner, Vice President Product Line.
The Porsche Traction Management formula can detect and react to wheel spin within 10 milliseconds, while Porsche Torque Vectoring Plus intelligently balances the force between the axles, sending force where it’s needed.
Turbo models are popular with Porsche’s active suspension management system, which allows for greater comfort in general driving conditions, but turns the Macan EV into a crouching monster that devours tracks when temperament gets the better of it.
Also for the first time in the Macan, those electrified models can be equipped with a steered rear axle, providing a more compact turning radius in busy urban environments, but also improving stability when travelling at top speeds.
It’s a forged offering, a do-it-all SUV that combines practicality with Porsche functionality – an attractive combination that has proven to be an incredible success for the Macan in the past.
We are due to see lots more electrified Porsches in the coming years, with Boxster, Cayenne and Panamera all due to get the battery treatment by 2026. There’s also a brand new seven-seat SUV in the workings.
But the good luck of those will depend on the functionality of this Macan EV, and therefore its importance to the logo should be underestimated.
Leon has been navigating a world where automotive and generation have met for about 20 years, encompassing everything from in-car entertainment to robot production plants. Currently, electric cars are the center of their attention, but wait a few years and they will be electric. Vertical take-off and landing barges. Outside of operating hours, you can be caught playing with typical analog motorcycles, as electric motors don’t replace an old Honda inline-four.
