Polestar has shown its goal of building its first high-performance electric roadster. With a design based largely on the O₂ concept, the Polestar 6 is expected to enter production in 2026.
“The car is the best combination of rugged electrical functionality and the excitement of new air with the roof open,” said Thomas Ingenlath, CEO of Polestar. The Polestar O₂ was unveiled in Los Angeles in March, advancing the design, generation and sustainability ambitions set out through Precept 2020, a study vehicle that presents the company’s vision for long-life sports cars. These concept cars are an exercise in shaping the logo design theme and exploring how it can be implemented in other morphologies. After all, although Polestar is connected to parent company Volvo from a business perspective, the project from the beginning has been to create a logo that holds, that requires the construction of a memorable visual. identity.
A distinct personality also means creating exclusive driving pleasure that is not the same as Volvo’s. All thanks to the glued aluminum platform, a generation adapted from the Polestar 5, which will also advise the production of the 6. At the same time, maneuverability remains tense due to the small roll angles and superior roll damping, and the feeling of agile and direct guidance is linear, with increased accumulation of guide torque.
The new car will feature the high-performance 800-volt electric architecture already on display for the Polestar Five to come with a power of up to 650 kW (884 hp) and 900 Nm of a two-engine powertrain, a target stroke time of 0 to 62 mph in just 3. 2 seconds and a top speed of 155 mph.
Like the O₂, the Polestar 6 will have a retractable hardtop. And it will maintain the proportions of an old sports car with a low and wide body, a compact 2 2 cabin design, minimal overhangs and a long wheelbase. The shape is also designed to aid the car’s aerodynamics as much as possible to maximize battery life. Built-in ducts, for example, improve laminar airflow on the wheels and body sides, while taillights serve as air blades to reduce turbulence behind the car.
The promise of the North Star logo has its roots in the promotion of sustainable transport. During the structure of the O2, the team incorporated a recycled content control approach to the circularity of steel components. For example, the other grades of aluminum used in the chassis are classified separately. so that they can be recycled more successfully and their homes preserved.
Meanwhile, all the comfortable parts of the interior are made of lightweight recycled polyester, adding foam, adhesive, three-dimensional knitted fibers and non-woven lamination to simplify the recycling procedure and achieve the circularity of materials, which is Polestar’s ultimate goal. It’s unclear whether this progressive thinking will succeed in the Polestar 6 production car, but I suspect some facets will evolve to meet production standards.
Five hundred editions of the “Polestar 6 LA Concept” are planned to celebrate the launch. They will play with the sky blue exterior, soft leather interior and 21-inch wheels of the original Polestar O₂ concept.
