Picture Enfield – Then And Now

ENFIELD, CT — Today’s look back into Enfield history is a bit different than the norm, for we were unable to find an actual photo of this long-gone business. However, an advertisement on page 134 of the 1961 Enfield High School yearbook provides a sketch drawing of one of the town’s longest-tenured retail stores: Hayden Wayside Furniture.

For nearly six decades, Hayden Wayside was among the preeminent home furnishings stores in the region. Located at 245 Enfield Street in North Thompsonville, the business was founded in 1941 by Frank Hayden. It was later sold to Mr. and Mrs. Arthur J. Leary Sr., and at the time of the store’s closure in 1999, it was owned by Thomas Leary and his sister, Margaret.

On July 29, 1999, the 37,140 square foot building on 2.6 acres was sold to the Stickley Furniture company for $1.09 million. Now known as Stickley Audi & Co., the business continues to thrive.

Here is a more contemporary look at the property, courtesy of the Enfield Town Assessor’s office.

Last week’s trivia answer:Last week’s trivia question was, “Who was Joyce Rubenstein?” The answer: She was the owner of Crazy Joyce’s Top Shop, a longtime staple of the old Enfield Mall at 25 Hazard Avenue. The store specialized in ironing decals onto T-shirts, and was known for its line of, ummm … tobacco-related products. Pat Droney was the first person to correctly provide the answer; the lucky bugger wins a 7-day, 2-night cruise to beautiful downtown Stafford Springs.

This week’s trivia question:Angelina’s Restaurant is an outstanding breakfast, lunch and dinner spot on the eastern edge of a small strip plaza in the Scitico section of Enfield. For many years, the site was home to Ann Fields Country Pie Restaurant. Prior to Angelina’s, a presidential-themed restaurant briefly operated in that location. What was it called ? Post the answer in the comments section below, or on the Enfield Patch Facebook page.
