Peugeot’s new 208 is too cute

Yes, Peugeot is preparing for a comeback. By the time the French logo arrived again in the United States, it had been 32 years since the company sold cars to American buyers. But what kind of cars will be registered?

THE CEO of PSA North America, Peugeot’s parent automaker Larry Dominique told Automotive News in an interview Monday that segments C and D were of interest to the brand. In the United States, these are the compact and intermediate car segments.

Dominique bluntly stated that Peugeot did have a pickup truck to compete in the developing segment, however, he said that the compact and mid-range markets are still very giant and that Peugeot needs a percentage in the United States.

Does this mean that there is a short list of cars that the French logo can sell here? We don’t know and Peugeot did not return a request for comment. It would be great to see sedan 208 and sedan 508 in the United States, but we also don’t know if Dominique refers to crossovers. Obviously, a wide variety of crossovers would be the ultimate apparent selection in the world of advertising car lovers. Again, the CEO stated that segments C and D would only be “initial”.

As for the impact of the ongoing FCA-PSA merger at Peugeot, the CEO warned that this had not bothered his work. Instead, it only focuses on creating the virtual footprint of the retail logo with a more limited focus on physical distributors. And while Peugeot will assume some higher volume segments, you need to make sure that volume is not the main driving force for profit in the coming years.

We will be more informed about Peugeot’s plans over the next two years, especially once FCA and PSA have completed their big merger to create the world’s fourth-largest car manufacturer. And when that happens, it will be known as Stellantis.
