Peugeot 3008 and 5008 Hybrid 48 V. All about the new PureTech with hybridization

The Peugeot 3008 and 5008 will get a 48V hybrid engine from June 2023.

Subscriber to plug-in hybrids, Peugeot is one of the few brands that does not offer 48V mild hybridization in its range. This will be selected from June in the SUV 3008 and 5008, before this generation takes position under the hood of other models. A delayed arrival that the Stellantis company can justify by launching an unprecedented electrified transmission related to a new 1. 2 PureTech engine, which is said to be third generation.

The PureTech engine has evolved from the existing generation. The power increases to 136 hp, although an edition of one hundred hp will be presented in some models.

At first glance, this 1. 2 PureTech three-cylinder engine (EB2 Gen3) looks like the existing block. In reality, Stellantis has almost started from a blank sheet of paper with a view to assembling the needs of the popular Euro 7 emissions (theoretically July 2025), for which it is predisposed. On that date, the engine will get a heater in its catalytic converter to manage pollutant emissions in bloodless starts. Like Renault’s new 1. 2, it adopts the Miller cycle (favorable to consumption), a variable geometry turbo and a timing chain that replaces the rain belt whose reliability makes consumers tremble. In addition, the injection voltage is increased to 350 bar by the use of new injectors. This mechanism develops a slightly higher force (136 hp, or 6 hp) for the same torque of 230 Nm, from 1,750 rpm.

Other novelties come with the formula and mild hybrid transmission of 48V. While the top brands install a small electrical device in the front of the engine (position P0), driven through the accessory belt, Stellantis implants it in the transmission (position P2). In the absence of a licensed production agreement with Japanese appliance manufacturer Aisin, the existing EAT8 is maintained through a new case provided through Punch Powertrain and manufactured as a component of a joint venture in Metz-Trémery.

Called e-DCS6, this six-speed gearbox adopts the precept of the double clutch but technically does not resemble what we know in Volkswagen and others. In addition, Punch Powerexercise has announced that it has reinvented the dual-clutch transmission. “Linking an epicyclic exercise to one of the clutches generated a ‘pre-reduction’ compared to the ratios in the gearbox. In doing so, we have developed a gearbox that, unlike other maximum dual clutch systems, does not use a single gear ratio yet makes you have the maximum gears for two separate gears. This particularly reduces the number of internal portions and leaves enough room for a 48 V or high-voltage motor,” explains the OEM. Precisely, the e-DCS incorporates a small electric motor of 28 hp (55 Nm of torque) provided through E-Motors (Nidec/PSA joint venture) and also produced at the Moselle site. It is powered by a 48 V battery (gross capacity 898 Wh) housed under the driver’s seat.

Developed through Punch Powertrain, this box replaces Aisin’s old EAT8 converter.

The PureTech engine is supported by an engine built into the new dual-clutch gearbox.

According to the manufacturer, this powertrain can operate more than 50% of the time in electric mode in the city. As for the autonomy in one hundred percent electric, it does not speak anonymously of figures. But, according to internal sources, it is slightly one kilometer in short distances in the city and maneuvers. The interest of this generation is basically to reduce consumption, especially in urban areas, where Peugeot advances a gain of 2. 5 l / 100 km compared to the existing PureTech 130 EAT8. The 3008 PureTech Hybrid 48 V offers 5. 6 l/100 km (5. 7 l for the 5008), a gain of almost 1 l/100 km. With 126 g/km of CO2 advertised (instead of 145 g), the 2023 penalty will go from €983 to €125. The 5008 Hybrid 48 V is approved for 128 g/km instead of 149 g, a penalty reduced to €170.

Apart from the express demonstration of the meters, no changes on board with respect to the existing gasoline versions.

In addition, hybridization has the merit of increasing the driving excitement at low revs by offering without delay a torque that eliminates “turbo lag” (turbo reaction time), but also by granting a gain of force (9 hp) when the engine forces the accelerator pedal to the full. Provided, of course, that the battery still has power. It is the electric motor that revalues deceleration and braking. Time at the instrumentation station (battery charge level, electrical operation, etc. ).

The 3008 and 5008 Hybrid 136 e-DCS6 (the official name) will be introduced to the French market in June 2023. Rates will be announced in spring. Let’s hope that the benefits of this new engine (reduced consumption, penalty penalizing less) will not be erased through the emerging costs with force for the PureTech 130 EAT8 (from € 37,370 in the 3008). This is to be feared because this new very complex transmission, whose production has recently resumed, will not happen.

It is the first time that the Peugeot 5008 hosts an electrified engine. All seven seats are sacrificed as the battery deploys under the driver’s seat.

Peugeot

The 136 hp PureTech 48V hybrid engine will be present in the 308 (July), the new 408 (October), as well as the redesigned 208 (November) and 2008 (January 2024). A less harsh edition of one hundred hp will reach 208 in July. At the same time, other brands of the Stellantis Group will benefit from this technology. It will notably appear on the Citroën C5 Aircross (summer 2023), C4 and C4 X (early 2024). The same at Opel in the redesigned Corsa, Astra, GrandlandArray. This will also be the case for Italian brands (in new models), as the Mirafiori plant will allow EDC6 from this moment part of 2024. Note that this new box will also be for There will be a plug-in hybrid edition from 2024, related to the 1. 6 PureTech Euro 7. A hitch that will update the existing kinematics (1. 6 PureTech e-EAT8).
