Payne: 2023 Honda CR-V Hybrid Gets Lighter and Funer

Sisquoc, Calif. — Amid rolling fields of vineyards, beans and corn is Martin Marietta’s large Sisquoc asphalt plant on a secluded stretch of Foxen Canyon Road here. rush to and from the plant every day to fill with extracted and processed asphalt from about 11 billion tons of hidden deposits on 38,000 acres of Santa Barbara County. The asphalt has paved the road strips that allow car access to the bucolic vineyards and panoramic views.

Vehicles like my 2023 Honda CR-V test vehicle.

With its instant torque of 247 pound-feet, my CR-V did the task of an occasional 75-foot double semi-trailer (the length of a tennis court) as I rushed to lunch in the nearby basement of Zaca Mesa. Let Honda make fun of hybrids.

In fact, Honda doesn’t even call its hybrids “hybrids” anymore. The CR-V introduced a petrol-electric powertrain in 2019 in the EX-L Hybrid and Hybrid Touring trims. Taking inspiration from Ford (another very functional brand) for 2023, the CR-V hybrids have details and wheels in black male, and Sport and Sport Touring emblems.

Sure, the hybrid claims 37 mpg, but I didn’t get anywhere near that on my 130-mile lunch trip from Santa Barbara, past the double semifinal, carving canyon roads and mingling with authoritative traffic. My Sport Touring style has recorded 28. 8 mpg genuine worldwide MPG.

With all of its 247 pound-feet of dual-electric motor torque at 2,000 rpm, the hybrid with its 2. 0-liter powertrain temporarily emerges from the duct to merge and pass zones. Credit also goes to the so-called e-CVT transmission, which responded to my 15-length forward foot with elegant force, with electronically programmed “steps” to mimic the gear settings of a classic multi-speed rack-and-pinion transmission.

The CR-V is not a Mazda CX-5/CX-50. Mazda’s super-driving SUV is my benchmark for the category with its huge 310-torque turbo-4 and milky, sleek 6-speed transsexual, however, the sixth-generation CR-V is a big step up from the latest generation.

Whether the larger engine is a step up from the CR-V’s popular 1. 5-liter turbo-4 is anyone’s guess.

The turbo-4, of course, is the same engine discovered in Honda’s King Civic halo, the killer of the compact car segment, and features hybrid-like CVT magic. On Route 101 to the winding road of Aliso Canyon, he continuously stepped on the accelerator and was greeted through a silky, jerkless, lag-free, electronically programmed “shift” reaction that propelled the CR-V, just like the Civic.

While governments threaten big fines if automakers don’t jump into electric vehicles within the next decade, Honda is decorating the CR-V with EV toys like regenerative paddles to encourage it to transition to full battery power. With a sales volume of 400,000 according to the year, the CR-V has room for EV models, but don’t expect mass adoption anytime soon.

The turbo-4 starts at $32,355, with Sport Hybrid styling widening the ante to $1,300. The stunning EX-L and Sport Touring styles add benefits like leather seats, heated steering wheel and wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto. Compare the Honda to a competitive package of CX-5/CX-50, Ford Escape Hybrid Sport and Kia Sportage, and find cars under $40,000 loaded with technology (adaptive cruise control, blind spot assist, automatic braking) found in luxury cars that cost $15,000 more.

If you’re not in a position to shell out $40,000, check out Honda’s HR-V and Mazda’s CX-30. They’re offered for $10,000 less, but with less convincing streams.

Basically, the CR-V earns its position in this elite organization with a major style upgrade by 2023, whether or not. Again, he credits the King Civic for his inspiration.

The CR-V’s busy and ostentatious taste was striking a decade ago, but it has grown with age. The Generation 6 takes the level with a slimmer, more timeless appearance, while retaining exclusive touches like bat-wing taillights. next to the Civic. ¿The ambitious grill? Think agreement.

Inside, the CR-V adopts Honda’s modern, horizontal design language with virtual displays, a honeycomb-shaped dashboard, before taking care of much-needed household chores.

Where on earth is the guidance column adjustment device that midway inspects the engine compartment in the fifth generation? It is now a proper transfer on the left side of the column. The trigger shift lever that saves space but with cramps in your hand?Finished, replaced with a suitable change rod.

Other main points are welcome.

The CR-V set the standard for the latest-generation second-row seats with doors that opened 90 degrees from the body. This simplified the spacious rear seats that seamlessly swallowed all six feet. The 90-degree doors are at the rear and the rear seat area is expanded to begin with.

After lunch, I folded my giant frame in the back seat to catch up on my email. If only the Delta master was so comfortable. The rear seat is even reclining.

The purpose of the CR-V is to be competent in everything without going beyond the limits on something. The Mazda is a sports car with street clothes. Kia’s Sportage has a curved model without a hood and Level 2 autonomous driving almost on par with the Cadillac Super Cruise. .

Honda may not allow you to drive with your hands on your knees for long periods of time like Kia, but it has kept the lane so I can, for example, manage Sirius XM stations and read text messages when they hit the road. Android wireless automatic system.

Honda still offers an internal navigation formula (perhaps because an EV edition will need you to navigate to testers), but its smartphone connectivity makes it easy to connect your corded phone with the popular 7-inch display, or wirelessly with the 9-inch upgrade. Worried about your phone running out of battery when browsing wirelessly? The Sport Touring style offers a giant charging block to maintain the speed that worked even with my huge Samsung Galaxy S20 (which had no compatibility with the latest-gen CR-V).

Many Honda have used Sisquoc Asphalt’s product in Santa Barbara County over the years. The Civic is an American icon, the Accord stole the Ford Taurus crown as the best-selling sedan in 1989, and now the CR-V has the best of Honda. -American style sale: one of the 3 best-selling nonvans in the country along with Nissan Rogue and Toyota RAV4.

With hybrid ambitions, RAV4 is the closest competitor to the CR-V. But the large RAV-4 is favored by the design of the Tacoma off-road truck. With its sleek styling and modern interior, the CR-V is a Civic on stilts.

When the asphalt truck looms, its accelerator pedal is ready to please.
