TORONTO, Aug. 12, 2020 /CNW/ – Unifor opened formal contract talks with Fiat Chrysler, Ford, and General Motors in Toronto today telling automakers the theme of these talks is The Future is Made in Canada.

“It’s no secret that our members should download and manufacture new products to build this industry and create smart jobs for the future,” Unifor’s national president, Jerry Dias, said after handing over the union’s proposals to Canadian corporate officials dressed in red. Uniform mask with theme.

“We’re losing sight of the slowdown in auto sales before COVID-19 forced the plant to close, but we also see an opportunity here to locate a Made in Canada solution as the industry recovers.

Dias also suggested to the federal government to drive a production strategy, noting that attendance for automatic meeting tasks stimulates the economy, as the task on a meeting line creates or supports about 10 more tasks.

“As we sat down today with the Detroit Three we were very emphatic about what needs to happen in this set of negotiations if we are going to have successful conclusions to this bargaining,” said Dias during a news conference streamed live on Unifor’s Facebook page. “We understand the industry, we understand where it’s heading, and we do not intend on having this industry and our members be left behind as we are heading to more global consolidations and major investments into electric vehicles.”

Unifor will continue its long-standing practice in style trading. The union is expected to determine which automaker will negotiate with to identify a style on which the rest of the contracts will be based.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, strict security protocols are implemented during the duration of the negotiations and high-resolution images of today’s exchange of proposals can be obtained here. Video from today’s live press convention can be downloaded in 4K for accredited media by sending an email to [email protected]. A virtual multimedia package with touch data, background data about the Canadian automotive industry and main points on plant locations, manufactured products and the number of personnel can be found on this website, which will be updated regularly.

Unifor is Canada’s largest personal sector union and represents 315,000 in all primary sectors of the economy, adding 20,000 cars and thousands of others operating in the auto parts sector. The union defends everyone and their rights, fights for equality and social justice in Canada and abroad, and strives to create a progressive replacement for a better future.
