The 2024 Okanagan Motorcycle Ride for Dad (OMRD) is two months away, but the year-long effort was celebrated at Kelowna General Hospital last week.
On Friday, May 3, Bob Charron, cancer survivor and president of OMRD, presented a check for $80,000 to BC Cancer and the Sindi Hawkins Cancer Clinic.
“I think about my brother, who completed his life, who spent a lot of time with his daughters walking and backpacking, and then in two years, the shell of a guy who left devastatingly,” she told KelownaNow.
However, detecting prostate cancer at an early level means more men will live and represents a cost to the Canadian healthcare system.
While last week’s check dropout is one of the peak dates on OMRD’s calendar, all eyes are now on June 9.
That’s when the 2024 event will take place, with many people starting their adventure from Banner Recreation in Kelowna to Okanagan Falls and back.
Once back at Banner Recreation, there will be BBQ, live band, prizes, rewards, and much more.
With $1. 185 million donated in the first 14 years, Charron says the goal for the event’s 15th anniversary is to raise $200,000.
“We have the momentum (and) we’d like to continue that momentum,” he said, adding that the money is very well spent on studies and that any proceeds will go to the cause.
OMRD has more on this year’s event, adding how to donate and how to volunteer on June 9 if you want to participate.
