Oakwood University beat out 31 to win the 2024 Honda Campus All-Star Challenge (HCASC) National Championship, the nation’s premier HBCU education festival, and a $100,000 institutional grant from Honda.
Howard University, Spelman College and Morehouse College all finished in the top four.

TORRANCE, Calif. , April 13, 2024 /PRNewswire/ — After a series of impressive endgames, Oakwood University earned the most sensible honors and a $100,000 institutional grant from Honda at the 35th annual Honda Campus All-Star Challenge (HCASC), the annual premier collegiate competition event for scholars from historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs). Held at Honda’s U. S. corporate campus in Torrance, California, more than two hundred HBCU scholars and their coaches participated in this year’s HCASC National Championship Tournament. Beyond the competition, the HCASC program included networking opportunities for scholars and activities with HBCU presidents and representatives. Honda has provided more than $500,000 in institutional grants to engage HBCUs.

Honda Campus All-Star Challenge is an annual program that celebrates the educational excellence of HBCU and academics from demanding situations to expand their wisdom in a wide diversity of topics, with the opportunity to expand lifelong learning skills, adding leadership, collaboration, and sportsmanship. Sixty-four groups competed in a series of National Qualifiers earlier this year and were narrowed down to 32 groups that participated in the HCASC National Championship Tournament. By taking advantage of the program’s initiative to create “Friends for Life,” the scholars involved have the opportunity to build camaraderie. with peers from other HBCUs and gain mentorship opportunities with HCASC alumni and Honda associates.
The theme of HCASC 2024, “Live Your Dream,” aims to motivate scholars to fulfill their dreams and manifest the good fortune and achievements they envision for themselves.
Oakwood University Wins 2024 HCASC National Champion Title
In a two-game sweep in the 35th final game of the HCASC National Championship, Oakwood University educators defeated the Howard University team, as it should be, answering questions about history, science, literature, religion, art, and pop culture. Oakwood beat the groups of 31 HBCUs and qualified for the national championship after winning a number of regional competitions during the school year.
The winning team was coached by Dr. Steven Lai Hing and includes team captain Jonathan Gunthrope, a senior finance specialist from Westchester, New York; Hannah Browning, a film and television production graduate from Powder Springs, Georgia; Janiah Hinds, a second-year history major in Memphis, Tennessee; and Grayson Mejia, an implemented math graduate from Henrico, Virginia. This year marks Oakwood University’s 28th appearance in a Honda Campus All-Star Challenge national championship tournament and its fourth victory.

At the time Howard University won a grant from Honda, as did third and fourth place: Spelman College and Morehouse College, respectively. Albany State University, Hampton University, Lincoln University-Pennsylvania, and Tennessee State University list the “Big 8” groups that competed in the HCASC Finals. In total, Honda will distribute more than $500,000 in institutional grants to the 32 schools.
Celebrating Individual Contributions
For 35 years, committed coaches, volunteers and alumni of the program have contributed to the good fortune of the Honda Campus All-Star Challenge. This year’s HCASC contestants decided on Lauren Nicole Johnson of the University of North Central Carolina for the Ernest C Award. . This year’s Jones Sportsperson Award, which recognizes a student who exemplifies team spirit, camaraderie, sportsmanship and education in the National Championship Tournament. The award is named after one of the first HCASC volunteers who mentored many HBCU students.
Clayton Mack of North Carolina Central University was named Coach of the Year. Investment and commitment of time and resources are vital to building a successful HCASC program and team. Mack’s relationship with HCASC spans more than 30 years. He played for North Carolina’s core team before returning as an assistant coach after graduation. His penchant for turning students into high-performing players earned him the name head coach, which he has held ever since. In addition to his own team, Mack has built appointments with other competitors, helping to raise the bar beyond North Carolina’s borders.

Honda continues to bring the legacy of HBCUs through systems such as HCASC and Honda Battle of the Bands, the first national HBCU marching band and dance team show, dating back to 2025. Honda has also partnered with the Thurgood Marshall College Fund and UNCF will provide scholarships for HBCU scholars to pursue degrees in engineering, supply chain management, and manufacturing-related fields.
