Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari recently unveiled Toyota’s pilot assignment in flex-fuel hybrid electric vehicles. A Corolla Altis Left-Drive Hybrid (LHD) was used to commemorate the event.

A fuel-efficient hybrid car would run on one hundred percent gasoline or a mixture of 20 and one hundred percent ethanol; And, of course, you’ll also get benefits from hybrid system assistance. By 2025, government mandates will require automakers to offer cars that can run on flex-fuel consisting of 20% ethanol and the rest gasoline.

With the automotive industry being a major contributor to India’s emerging emissions, it is more than ever for automakers to start focusing on reducing their carbon footprint. One way to do this is to introduce flex-fuel cars to mainstream buyers. As everyone knows, flex-fuel cars generate fewer emissions than a popular vehicle running on regular fuel and select fuel is also much less expensive than gasoline.

Launching the pilot project, Gadkari said automakers can make flex-fuel cars in India to boost the rural economy by converting surplus grains and sugar into ethanol.

Flexible fuels refer to a mixture of gas and ethanol (or methanol) and will be less expensive than gas. Ethanol, known as biofuel, is a natural form of alcohol made from molasses from sugar cane, bamboo, among others. A flexible fuel engine can run on standalone or mixed fuel.
