Nissan has announced that consumers of its electric cars will pay for parking with electricity.
In what the automaker describes as a world first, electric vehicle owners will need to discharge the battery from their vehicle to pay for parking. Of course, the formula will only include paintings at the Nissan Pavilion Exhibition Center in Yokohama, Japan, which opened to the public on August 1.

The pavilion is located near the company’s headquarters and will be open until October 23 as a showcase of the car manufacturer’s state-of-the-art technologies. For example, consumers can revel in Nissan’s complex ProPILOT driving assistance system, Invisible-to-Vehicle (I2V) technology, while taking advantage of facilities such as electric vehicle sharing and motorcycle rental. Those who make a stop on the site can also play virtual tennis with Naomi Osaka, Grand Slam champion and Nissan logo ambassador.
Nissan also offers virtual reports on your Formula E racing car and the new Ariya crossover. There is also an on-site café that runs on Nissan Leafs and solar power.
“The Pavilion is a position where consumers can see, feel and get inspiration from our vision of the short and long term for society and mobility,” nissan CEO Makoto Uchida said. “As the world moves towards electric mobility, electric cars will join society in a way that goes beyond undeniable transport.”
Although the payment for electric power parking is limited only to this Nissan, a program like this could be very popular with electric vehicle owners if they ever took it to public spaces.
