Nissan and the IRS announced that the Leaf will once again be eligible for the federal electric vehicle tax credit.
With now $3,750 in tax credits, the Leaf can start with just $24,400, making it one of the cheapest electric cars in the U. S. U. S.
Nissan, like many other automakers, has struggled to comply with battery components to qualify for tax credits of up to $7,500 for electric cars in the U. S. U. S.
The Tennessee-built Leaf has won and lost twice since tax credit reform implemented last year.
With stricter requirements for the origin of battery parts set to go into effect in January 2024, the vehicle has once again lost credits.
Now, Nissan has announced that the Leaf will once again have a $3,750 credit:
2024 Nissan LEAF cars manufactured in 2024 and sold on or after March 6 could be eligible for a portion of the U. S. Federal Electric Vehicle Tax Credit. The visitor meets all acquisition and source of income requirements for the Electric Vehicle Tax Credit, as defined. in Section 30D of the Internal Revenue Code.
In a press release, Nissan says the Leaf now meets the needs for “battery components,” accounting for part of the total $7,500 credit. This means that the Leaf does not meet critical mineral needs.
Since the Leaf has a starting MSRP value of $28,140 in the U. S. In the U. S. , that means the Leaf starts at just $24,390 if you’re eligible for income-based tax credits.
From 2024, credits can also be implemented at the time of purchase, thus reducing the cost.
With some state and local incentives in some areas, the value of the Leaf can drop to around $20,000, which is for an all-new electric vehicle.

That’s a lot. However, the Leaf is perfect, especially at this price point. This is the basic version, which has a 40 kWh battery that allows for a ride of around 150 miles.
But it’s still a wonderful city car. If it meets your needs, the deal is tricky to close.
However, I’d also like to point out that the Leaf update is coming up and I have a feeling it’s going to be nice. Keep that in mind. That said, it may also come with an increase in prices.
