Newell to get wet and crazy with second annual day of fun

July 17, 2024

Sponsored through the Newell Community Improvement Coalition (CIC) and the Newell Volunteer Fire Department, excitement for this rainy and wild event, scheduled for Saturday, August 3, continues to grow.

According to coalition spokeswoman Heather Culig, most of the day’s activities begin at 11 a. m. at the Newell Community Center (also known as the Wells Building), at 813 Washington St. , in downtown Newell.

In addition to a combo chimney truck slide, inflatable space drive, and soaking tank, which was brought in the second year, partygoers can also participate in the food trucks and explore the pets that can be had at the Hancock County Animal Shelter. who will have animals on site.

The coalition offers many activities at 11 a. m. In addition to the grand opening of the newly renovated Newell Community Center, a Touch-a-Truck event and a newly added single-elimination basketball tournament will be held throughout the morning.

Up to 8 participants per round pay $1 to test their loose shooting skills unlike other competitors. Each winning shooter in the circle wins the bag for that circle.

No registration is required to participate in Knockout.

At noon, the highly competitive second-year cornhole tournament returns. The entrance fee is $20 per team for the cornhole tournament, and winners share a cash prize.

Activities continue until 3 p. m. , when attendees begin lining up for the popular Water Parade, which begins an hour later.

Culig said the coalition will have water guns for sale at a booth outside the network center. This is not a typical parade, the coalition encourages participants to gather their friends and family along Washington Street, between Third and Ninth. Streets, where they go armed with water pistols to shoot at the parade floats while spraying revelers with their own water guns.

Up to 10 of this year’s winning floats, decided by a trio of parade judges, will be decided for individual one-year passes from Frank Six to the Wayne Six (formerly Newell) Toll Bridge.

Due to the excessive popularity of the parade last year, the number of floats was limited to 50 this year, so it was very important to register early to secure your spot.

As in 2023, the CIC will promote water guns at its data booth in front of the network center, in case attendees forgot to bring their own.

Participants who have reserved Fun Day t-shirts can also collect them on the day of the occasion at the CIC booth until 3:30 p. m. m. T-shirts had to be reserved until July 21.

Barrels of water will be placed along the direction of the parade for other people to fill with weapons of their choice during the rainy portion of the parade.

For protection reasons, water balloons are prohibited, Culg explained.

Live music, courtesy of Kent Cox, will conclude the day’s activities at 6 p. m. near Hancock County Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram.

Parking for the occasion is at Clarke Field, Newell Community Center.
