New Toyota Camry Hybrid unveiled: Paris Motor Show 2018

The Toyota Camry has been among the most successful sedans in the world for a long time now, but with diesel powertrains dominating the European market for the last two decades Toyota had seen fit to stop selling the Camry there. However, with increasing emphasis on sustainable mobility and the rapid demonisation of diesel happening across the western hemisphere, the Japanese manufacturer has reintroduced the Camry in its hybrid avatar in Europe after an absence of more than 14 years.

Launched at the Paris Motor Show today, the Camry Hybrid comes with an entirely new 2.5-litre ‘self-charging’ hybrid engine setup that comprises a four-cylinder petrol engine, which works in tandem with an electric motor to churn out 221PS of power. The new Toyota Hybrid System (THS II) includes sequential shiftmatic technology that allows quick-shifting, like a 6-speed automatic transmission through a console-mounted lever, a trait rarely found in CVTs. The new Camry incorporates Toyota’s much acclaimed engine tech including Dual VVT-i with VVT-iE (Variable Valve Timing intelligent system by Electric motor) and D-4S (Direct injection 4-stroke gasoline engine Superior version) for optimal power output, emissions, performance and fuel efficiency. Toyota claims an efficiency of 23.8kmpl.

Inside, the dashboard features an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system, complemented by a 10-inch HUD and a 7-inch multi-inshaper screen to shape Toyota’s man-machine interface, which provides onboard voice and diagnostics controls. With a selection of leather or fabric lining, the new Camry Hybrid interior comes in two color combinations with beige and black diversifications.

What makes the Camry undeniably identifiable along the way is its presence and size. Built on Toyota’s new Global Architecture Platform (TNGA), the new Camry Hybrid has a low center of gravity and acres of area inside, as well as a huge 524-litre trunk. And according to Toyota, the lightweight and highly inflexible frame provides a really extensive 30% torsional stiffness to the outgoing model. This not only reduces vibration and rolling in the car, but also improves overall handling and driving quality.

When it comes to protection, the new Toyota can compete with the most productive in the industry with a multitude of active and passive protection technologies on board. With a combination of virtual optics and millimeter wave radar technology, Camry’s onboard computers can cause protective features such as a precolcision formula (PCS) with a pedestrian detection function, adaptive cruiser (ACC), lane departure alert (LDA) with orientation assistance, automatic traffic lighting devices (AHB) and RSA road traffic assistance (RSA). The Camry’s frame design was also designed to absorb front, side and rear impacts, dispersing collision power to help you save deformation of the high-strength cab area. It is also popular with Toyota’s Safety Sense technology, complemented by blind spots and traffic monitors at junctions.

More than 19 million Camrys have been sold internationally, so deliveries of the new hybrid are expected to begin in Europe in early 2019, and those numbers are expected to continue to accumulate. In India, however, the fate of the Camry has been mixed. Toyota halted production in October last year, prompting a weak claim for an increase in value following the repeal of the FAME program in India. With the abolition of the FAME program (faster adoption and manufacture of hybrid and electric vehicles) and the accumulation of luxury vehicle taxes, cars like the Camry Hybrid cost more than their gasoline and diesel counterparts. Although Toyota has restarted production of Camry in India, sales remain poor.

However, we hybrids deserve a big comeback, as the inhabitants of CAFE (Corporate Average Fuel Efficiency) are expected to bring to India from 2022. Under this rule, automakers will have to maintain a minimum average fuel power popular for cars across their country. Portfolios Therefore, we expect automakers to release more hybrids and electric cars, as well as cars with conventional motor to achieve the required purpose and the advent of the updated Camy here also deserves to give a much-needed spice to the market.
