The Peugeot 5008 will go through a primary overhaul when the next-generation style arrives in 2023. Capacity will be taken one step forward and a diversity of electric propulsion systems will be a component of diversity. When it goes on sale, the new 5008 will continue to compete with seven-seater SUVs such as the Skoda Kodiaq, Nissan X-Trail and SEAT Tarraco.
It will be based on the PSA Group eVMP platform, which will be used for all upcoming primary models of Peugeot, Citroen, DS and Vauxhall. This platform supports batteries with a capacity of up to one hundred kWh, as well as front-wheel drive and four-wheel drive configurations.
Peugeot 3008 2022 for coupe style
We expect the entry-level style to use PSA’s existing 134 hp electric powertrain, which also drives the Peugeot e-208, DS 3 Crossback E-Tense and Vauxhall Corsa-e. The larger dimensions of the 5008 will accommodate a larger battery, meaning a diversity of two hundred miles can be achieved. A variety of stronger electric motors will also be available, with a maximum power of around 335 hp.
Upgrading to a more expensive powertrain and larger battery means a diversity of approximately 350 miles. The next replacement of the Peugeot 3008 will take up about 400 miles with cargo, however, the 5008 is heavier, its larger dimensions make it less efficient.
Plug-in hybrid power trains and mild hybrids will make up the rest of the diversity. The newer Citroen C4 is expected to retain several of the PSA Group’s traditional gasoline and diesel engines in the short or long term, so the 5008 will likely include the same diversity of engines, updated and with the smooth hybridization mentioned above.
Peugeot’s consumer analysis suggests that the 5008 is a car basically purchased through families, while the “family” 3008 SUV is purchased through couples with adult or childless children. The next-generation 5008 will put more emphasis on practicality, and a right rear component will give more space to those in the third row of seats. This will look like an SUV, but perhaps more boxed and not as modern as the existing car.
The company’s former design director, Gilles Vidal, spoke this year with our sister Auto Express, stating that visitor research “could lead to the next generation of the 5008 passing even more square and finding a way to make it sexy.”
“When I say square compared to the 5008, it shouldn’t be a boring square. There is a place, of course, to make it more practical and then generate a design that is amazing but not through dynamism.”
