Tesla CEO Elon Musk called an alleged arson attack at his gigafactory near Berlin “extremely stupid” after far-left activists claimed responsibility.
The German government said firefighters responded Tuesday to a fire at an electric power tower near the plant, cutting power and forcing a halt to production. The head of Tesla’s factory, Musk’s first in Europe, told Reuters that power would have to be cut off for several days and showed they had been evacuated.
In a Wednesday update, German media reported that the plant would remain operational until at least the end of next week.
A purported far-left activist organization called Volcano Group took credit for the incident in a 2,500-word letter attacking Tesla and Musk that was distributed to local media. Police said they were aware of the letter, which signed “Agua De Pau,” the call from a volcanic mountain in the Azores, and said they were verifying its authenticity.
“They’re either the dumbest ecoterrorists on the planet or the puppets of those who don’t have smart environmental goals,” Musk wrote in X.

Authorities have promised consequences for anyone who sets fire to the pole. The damage temporarily knocked out power to several surrounding communities.

The dominance around Tesla’s Gigafactory has been the subject of environmental protests since Musk opened the facility two years ago.
“We sabotaged Tesla,” Agua De Pau’s letter to Reuters said. The letter describes the attack as a gift for International Women’s Day, March 8.

Plans to expand Tesla’s factory, which makes around 500,000 electric cars a year, have run into opposition from citizens who voted against a move to cut down trees for construction, Reuters reported.

Tesla aims to double the site’s capacity to 100 gigawatt hours of battery production and 1 million cars each year, which would prevent Musk from dominating the European market.
Environmental activists have built and occupied treehouses in the forest around the factory that they hope will disappear if the expansion is approved.
