NEW YORK (AP) — Honda Motor’s U. S. division is recalling more than 2. 5 million cars in the U. S. because of a fuel pump defect that can increase the risk of engine failure or stall while driving.
According to documents released through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the fuel pump impeller used in Acura and Honda cars from 2017 to 2020 was improperly molded. This affects low-density impellers, which “can deform and interfere with the fuel pump body” over time, regulators said, causing the fuel pump to malfunction.
If the fuel pump module is not working, the car’s engine may not start or stall while driving, the NHTSA said, increasing the risk of injuries and injuries. Honda says it has not received any reports of injuries or injuries similar to this recall. till the date.
The automaker said Thursday that it will update the fuel pumps of all cars affected by the recall free of charge, in separate phases, and that the first batch of notification letters will be sent out in February.
“Countermeasure replacement parts are not available in sufficient quantities for all recalled vehicles at the time of this announcement, and American Honda intends to notify vehicle owners in stages,” Honda wrote.
Notification to distributors is expected to begin early this week, according to documents filed by NHTSA.
