OTTAWA, ON and CHELTENHAM, ON, March 26, 2024 /PRNewswire/ — The Mining Association of Canada (MAC) and The Copper Mark are pleased to announce a new collaboration on a primary pilot task for insurance processes for both sectors Towards Sustainable Mining. (TSM) and Copper Mark.
TSM and Copper Mark are committed to their assurance criteria and processes to ensure accountability, transparency, and credibility for their users. Both criteria have also committed to demonstrating leadership in equivalence and alignment in the realm of mining criteria. Engagement is initiative assurance processes, in which corporations and venues are independently verified through third-party assurance providers.
As a component of this pilot, MAC and Copper Mark are merging their respective safety procedures for the pilot through MAC members subject to TSM verification in 2024, with the Copper Mark Secretariat managing the safety procedure on behalf of MAC. The CMA expects that almost all of its partners’ services audited in 2024 will do so, representing approximately 30 services in 2024.
In the case of TSM, the merged assurance procedure adds new features, including:
Mandatory visits to operational facilities under audit.
Prior review by the Copper Mark Secretariat of the completeness of the auditors’ assurance plans.
Inclusion of research on means to count insurance plans.
Minimum criteria for interviews with workers in the audit process.
Conduct an auditor hole assessment of any functionality under TSM A and publish action plans across services to address those holes.
In the case of the Copper Mark, the pilot will understand the vital role national panels play in TSM in Canada and elsewhere through:
TSM’s requirement to have an independent TSM oversight procedure will continue to be monitored through the Copper Mark Secretariat.
Copper Mark staff will also sign up as observers on MAC’s National Communities of Interest Committee, adding the post-audit review process.
The effects of the audit will be publicly disclosed on TSM’s online page via MAC, in accordance with TSM’s general processes, as well as on Copper Mark’s online page. More information about this pilot will be available soon on the TSM and Copper Mark website. Pages.
According to Pierre Gratton, President and CEO of MAC, “TSM and Copper Mark have established a close relationship and are already engaging in cross-recognition of their respective protocols/standards, implemented through built-in audits, joint training, and supplier certification. accreditation. We have learned from others in recent years, helping us expand and refine tools, processes, and policies, such as assurance processes, interest shock policies, or valuation reports. This pilot takes that data to a new and exciting level. .
TSM and Copper Mark rely on comparable degrees of market popularity for their systems, reaching the same stakeholders. TSM and Copper Mark believe that this closer collaboration will particularly strengthen the pricing proposition for corporations and their services implementing TSM, Copper Mark or both, and for consumers looking to procure responsibly produced materials.
According to Michèle Brülhart, CEO of Copper Mark, “Copper Mark is based on the principle of collaboration to increase power and reduce the implementation burden for users of our warranty framework. Close collaboration with TSM over the past few years in spaces such as criteria, education, and embedded audits have demonstrated the wonderful similarity of our respective approaches and the complementarity of our programs. In particular, we hope to engage more directly with TSM’s physically powerful mechanism to drive nationwide replacement across the Community. Panel of interest and to further link our respective stakeholder networks. This pilot is an exciting opportunity to bring together the most productive from both worlds to gain advantages from the corporations that implement our criteria and consumers source responsibly.
In addition to the pilot, MAC and Copper Mark are looking for opportunities to mutually fertilize their stakeholder networks by finding tactics for representation on their governing bodies. The impact of this year’s pilot will be evaluated with a view to informing opportunities. for further collaboration and integration of Copper Mark and TSM in 2025 and beyond, prospectively adding the potential expansion of this collaboration with other TSM partners around the world.
The strengthening of the relationship between MAC and Copper Mark has accelerated in part due to ongoing discussions about the progress of a popular convergent miner that also reaches out to the ICMM and the World Gold Council.
The convergence process highlighted the similarity of TSM’s and Copper Mark’s insurance strategy and highlighted the high degree of complementarity between the two frameworks, particularly in terms of their scope, stakeholder engagement and market recognition. MAC and Copper Mark say this pilot task will help inform the progression of a converged assurance procedure for the new convergent standard.
The merging of the characteristics of TSM’s and Copper Mark’s assurance processes provides a practical example of how convergence can serve to ensure that individual partner criteria are not weakened.
