ALPENA TOWNSHIP, MI – A man was caught driving with two handguns, a machete and open beer cans inside the vehicle over the weekend in Northern Michigan.
The 61-year-old Midland man was driving a Subaru Outback northbound on US-23 when he made a U-turn. The turn was observed by a Michigan State Police trooper on a patrol car at a desk in the area of Bare Point Road in Alpena Township.
Shortly after the U-turn, the officer heard a loud noise and the Subaru pulled over to the side of the road. The driver deployed and began retrieving parts from the rear of the vehicle to replace a flat tire. The officer drove to the man’s spot and showed up to help.
After speaking with the man, the officer suspected he was under the influence. Field sobriety tests were conducted and the man was arrested for operating while intoxicated.
A search of the vehicle revealed a rifle in the rear and a loaded rifle. . . A . 357-caliber handgun in a duffel bag in the front passenger seat. The guy had a hidden permit to carry the gun. The thief also discovered open beer cans. a fixed-blade knife and a machete in the vehicle.
The man is being held in the Alpena County Jail and charged with one count each of carrying a concealed weapon, firearm loaded into a vehicle, possession of a weapon under the influence of alcohol, driving while intoxicated and intoxicating substances open in a vehicle.
He filed charges in Alpena County 88th District Court. His bail was set at $2,500 or 10 percent. He is due back in court at 2 p. m. on Monday, Dec. 4.
