Mercedes’ new SUV demonstrates the strength of choice

Choosing Geländewagen is a simple proposition, if you have the money. Few cars offer the prestige that the Mercedes-Benz G-Class does.

Just as the G-Wagen is a symbol of prestige, so is an electric vehicle (EV). The new Mercedes-Benz G 580 all-electric gaming application vehicle (SUV) is a transparent demonstration of the company’s commitment to powering battery-electric cars. (BEV), as well as its commitment to offering other engines that visitors demand, all of them electrified.

In addition to the G 580, the next-generation G-Class lineup includes the 2025 Mercedes-Benz G 550 and Mercedes-AMG G 63. The latter are mild-gas hybrid models, one with a six-cylinder engine and the other with a V8 hood.

For the average passerby, the battery-electric G is simply a quieter G-Class motor than its siblings. It necessarily looks the same and doesn’t have a special EQ badge.

There are a few nods to its electric nature that can be spotted through trained eyes: a raised hood and widened rear wheel arches with airbags.

But underneath the skin, the G 580 is very different. It’s a fusion of decades of on- and off-road engineering combined with next-age equipment and electronics.

The G 580 is forced through a 116-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery housed in a torsion-resistant case to protect it from the elements. This strength selection allows the G to have more wading capacity than its gas-powered brethren.

This allows the SUV to go from 0 to 60 miles per hour (mph) in just 4. 6 seconds. Its top speed is electronically limited to 180 km/h.

The frame is paired with an independent double-wishbone front suspension and a newly designed forged rear axle. Virtual differential locks enable intelligent torque vectoring.

The independent character of the engines allows for exclusive functions, adding the G-Turn, the SUV’s ability to perform what is known as a 360-degree “tank turn”.

The G-Steering function for a smaller turning radius, ideal for trail tours.

The G is capable of wading through up to 33. 5 inches of water, which is 5. 9 inches more than the G 550 and AMG G 63.

The SUV’s central infotainment display (12. 3-inch combined with a 12. 3-inch driver data display) can serve as an off-road cockpit, with a “transparent hood” feature that uses cameras to display a transparent symbol of the terrain ahead. with unaltered visibility from the front of the vehicle.

It also includes the MBUX infotainment formula, a Nappa leather-wrapped multifunction steering wheel, the Burmester 3-D surround sound formula, and 64-color ambient lighting.

U. S. drivers can enjoy the G-Wagen in the Edition One edition for the 2025 style year. This edition is supplied with the AMG Line and Night packages as standard.
