In Elbourne we are fortunate to have a city that is easy to get around. There’s an extensive network of trams and exercise, car-free day trips, motorcycle lanes, and numerous walking trails. This means that it is imaginable to live here without owning a car, which not only helps decrease traffic congestion on the roads, but also decreases destructive pollutants that affect our natural environment.
And now, a global study investigating which cities in the world are the most productive for living a car-free life has proven it, naming Melbourne as one of the top 20 most walkable places (i. e. , it’s easy to get around without a car).
Our city is ranked 17th on the world list, facing a tough festival from other prominent cities. On the list of the most productive places to live without a car is Munich in Germany, followed by Milan in Italy, Warsaw in Poland, Helsinki in Finland and Paris in France. The ten most sensible ended up passing through Tokyo, Japan, in sixth place, then Madrid in Spain, Oslo in Norway; Copenhagen in Denmark and Amsterdam in the Netherlands. Clearly, Europe is on the right track when it comes to reducing the need for cars.
To determine which cities are the most productive in terms of car-free living and walking opportunities, comparison site Compare the Market looked at points such as the amount of rainfall, the number of lanes for motorcycles and pedestrians, location safety, the quality of public transportation, and car-free places. One of the criteria that Melbourne scored well for was hiking trails, being one of the top 4 cities in the world with the most hiking trails, along with Sydney, Rio, and Tokyo.
So put on your running shoes or hop on your motorcycle and head out to explore all of Melbourne’s walking and cycling trails; We are lucky to have them.
