McLaren would possibly have to worry more between their driver match in the 2025 F1 season, thinks Gary Anderson.

McLaren won the first championship of his first manufacturer since 1998 last season, with Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, surpassing Ferrari Twinning to take the woking based on the front of Formula 1.

Speaking in his column for the race, former F1 car designer Gary Anderson noted where he thinks world champions will have to be from the 2025 F1 season.

A possible obstacle, he believes that McLaren allows imaginable tensions among his drivers to degenerate on the right path.

In 2024, Norris and Piasstri were quite harmonious, but, until the advent of the “papaya rules”, Piasstri showed little sign that the game is a secondary role for Norris in the championship. That led him to complete on track in Hungary and Italy, the races that Norris finished one position to the Australian at a time when he was looking to close out Max Verstappen’s troubled lead.

While Piastri settled in a secondary role in the final races, moving to leave Norris in the Brazilian race of Sprint, his preference for passing the instance with Norris only attenuated the fact that ‘he had started the season most slowly than Norris, carrying to a problem deficit that inserted Norris as head of McLaren.

For F1 2025, this deficit is reset and, with Piastri entering his third season in F1, he’ll be eager to prove he is capable of the same highs as Norris.

Without any equipment order in its place, Anderson believes that McLaren will have to maintain a careful view of the dynamics between his two pilots and that the tensions are not delegated.

“From my point of view, Lando Norris and Oscar Piasstri are the maximum matching matching the network,” Anderson wrote.

“The two are fast and learn, however, will have the way the beginning of the season takes position on how the appointments are built.

“However, I am sure there will be comfortable chimneys at some point in the season and McLaren will have to be there to turn the fireplace immediately. “

After trying to direct their 2024 season by letting the pilots run to another until a long time in the season, Anderson suspects that another plan will be in position this season.

“Managing drivers from day one will be important,” he said.

“At times in 2024, it made a bit of a mess of that and left too many decisions up to the drivers. It will have learned from it and I would suggest McLaren needs to have a plan in place before race one.”

An example of tension in F1 2024 was in the Hungarian Grand Prix when, due to the decisions of the McLaren well, Norris was discovered on the road to Piestri for the final pass after the Australian had a convincing advantage. First, he seemed reluctant to move to Piastri, with his career engineer, Will Joseph, praying in relation to the radio of the team, to remain in the team in the brain as “he would like” for his championship offer.

Norris eventually yielded the place to Piastri and explained afterward that it had always been his intention to do so.

Anderson predicted that the Woking-based team would stick to returning to the most sensible with some other title, and suggested the team should not indulge by stressing Red Bull’s example.

Having won the 2022 and ’23 titles, Red Bull fell off the boil in ’24 as the development path of the RB20 proved the wrong direction and introduced instability by way of narrowing the performance window as well as making the car less pliable.

“If McLaren keeps doing what it did in the latter part of 2024, which was built on a sound understanding of what these ground effect cars need to go quickly, then it will be the favourite for this year’s title,” Anderson said.

“Improving in slow corners is a target, but you have to be careful that it doesn’t come at the expense of high-speed stability.

“I don’t think it will rest on its laurels. It did that when it ran the Honda power unit and it really set McLaren back for quite a few years, and you are only as good as your next result so keeping your head down is critical.

“As Andrea Stella’s team boss has already pointed out, McLaren will be complacent now, it’s the sensible thing to do in F1. The first 4 are so tight that even a small shock can send you the first one to the fourth in the hierarchical order.

“Red Bull’s sudden decline in 2024 is a reminder that even a team with a healthy buffer can soon be in big trouble if the necessary development strides aren’t taken.”
