With the departure of veteran F1 leader Ron Dennis, adjustments are being made.
For nearly 40 years, McLaren has used an exclusive naming scheme for its Formula One cars, all born with “MP4” for McLaren Project Four. It began in 1981, when Ron Dennis joined the team in the hope that the program would be a success, and for 36 years, he has been at the birth of each and every chassis name ever since. So far it is.
With Ron Dennis leaving as head of F1 at McLaren, new boss Zak Brown is implementing some adjustments at McLaren. The first is to delete the historical NAME MP4 for 2017. The new chassis will be called “MCL32”, ending a decades-long culture in an attempt to update the logo and its image.
And that’s not all. By the end of this month, McLaren is expected to present his new decoration for next season and, according to the preview he tweeted last month, will be radically different from the existing color palette.
Will all those adjustments lead to a successful season? We’ll have to wait for the first race in Australia to end.
