Max Verstappen won the Monaco Grand Prix to take the lead in formula one World Championship qualifying for the first time in his career, with rival Lewis Hamilton in his Mercedes team.
Verstappen, who started from the front after poleman Charles Leclerc was excluded after a mechanical failure, led almost every turn to a crushing victory here in Monte Carlo.
But Hamilton took the checkered flag in seventh place after wasting two positions on the first pit stop.
Verstappen crossed the final line 8. 9 seconds ahead of Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz, with Lando Norris taking the third podium of his career after a good run to the third.
On a depressing day for Mercedes, Valtteri Bottas withdrew from the position of the moment after the Finn’s right front wheel got stuck at its pit stop.
Verstappen began Sunday’s career with 14 Hamilton issues, but now leaves the principality 4 tracks ahead of seven-time world champion.
Hamilton, who faced a difficult task after qualifying seventh, targeted Mercedes after placing the first of the leading group to avoid tires on the 29th lap of 78.
He went out of boxing in eighth place, then saw Sebastian Vettel’s Aston Martin and Red Bull’s Sergio Perez return in front of him after moving to the rubber several laps later.
“I don’t get it, boys, ” said Hamilton on the radio. ” I kept the tires going to go any further and stopped before the others. “
Hamilton’s racing engineer, Peter Bonnington, had to announce the sad news that Perez also advanced him on the track.
“We lost the opposite position to Perez, ” said Bonnington. I said, “I’m sorry. “
With long-range overtaking on the narrow streets of Monte Carlo, Hamilton could not impress Pierre Gasly.
In the latter stages, he stopped for a moment to pick up a new rubber and claim a bonus point for the fastest lap before completing near a lap at Verstappen.
