Late last year, it was revealed that Maserati had suspended development of the next-generation Quattroporte. The new model is rarely expected to launch until 2028, but when it does, it may arrive with a different architecture than originally planned.
According to Maserati Quattroporte and GranTurismo chief engineer Davide Danesin, the Italian company had completed part of the progression of the new style when it suspended the project. The next model had been built around the STLA Large platform, but Danesin says a final resolution on the platform has not yet been made.

“I’m not saying it’s not [STLA Large],” he told Autocar. “I think the optimization we’re looking for is the optimization of what’s already available. “
If Maserati decides not to use this platform, it could opt for an extended version of the bases used in the all-electric GranTurismo Folgore. Danesin says this setup could “potentially” work on the Quattroporte. Unlike most other electric vehicles, the GranTurismo Folgore does not have a skateboard architecture with the batteries on the ground, but instead they are arranged in a T-shape along the spine of the car. The advantage is that this has allowed Maserati to reduce the driver’s position compared to other electric cars based on a skateboard-like architecture.
Danesin added that the insufficiency and weight contributed to the postponement of the electric quattroporte project.
“The Quattroporte is a vital factor for Maserati,” he said. It has to be exceptional in each and every way: style, architecture, performance. There will also be many innovations in electric progression in the future. The new scope target will also have to be much stricter. Today, [373 miles] is enough. Maybe for a new Quattroporte we’d like more.
“Modern electric cars are getting heavier and heavier and we want to avoid this trend,” he added. “Collectively, we want to have more time to optimize the package, and that’s why we’re postponing it. “.
