Man charged with involuntary manslaughter in connection with a hit and run in Hartford on New Year’s Day

A South Windsor man arrested Wednesday in connection with a fatal New Year’s Day hit-and-run in Hartford, according to the Hartford Police Department.

Hartford police responded to a serious twist of the fate of a vehicle to a pedestrian on Main Street and Battles Street after Jan. 1, 2022. Upon arrival, police discovered Michael Brown, 51, of Windsor, unconscious and with life-threatening injuries. he was rushed to St. Francis Hospital and later pronounced dead.

Police said the vehicle that struck Brown, a black Infiniti G35, fled the scene and was later discovered unoccupied.

Brown, a security guard at the Windsor school formula after years of running for the school formula, according to his obituary.

He was a sports fan and enjoyed the Pittsburgh Steelers and Los Angeles Lakers. He played soccer in his youth and then coached his son’s team, according to his obituary.

Crime Scene Division detectives took over the investigation and identified the alleged driving force of the fleeing vehicle as 23-year-old Jahbez Copeland and received an arrest warrant.

Copeland arrested Wednesday and transported to the Hartford Police Detention Division for treatment.

Copeland was charged with second-degree involuntary manslaughter, evasion of responsibility resulting in death, reckless driving, failure to renew registration and illegally operate a motor vehicle without minimum insurance and detained in lieu of $150,000 bail, police said.
