Man accused of truck to California, protesters used hold as ‘training camp’

A man who was arrested after allegedly driving a truck through a crowd of nonviolent protesters during a demonstration in May used his family’s hold as a “training camp,” the federal government said. Benjamin Jong Ren Hung, 28, of San Marino, has been charged with a conspiracy charge to send firearms across state borders and make a fake firearms acquisition, CBS Los Angeles reports.

On May 31, Hung “intentionally drove his Dodge Ram pickup truck adorned with flags related to far-right teams in a crowd of Americans peacefully protesting racial injustice in police practices on a Pasadena street,” according to an affidavit from an FBI agent filed with the federal criminal complaint.

“Victims were forced to deviate from their path to avoid being beaten,” the affidavit says.

No one hurt. Hung not accused of assaulting the protesters.

However, Pasadena police arrested Hung discovered a loaded semi-automatic pistol and several high-capacity magazines in the truck, according to the affidavit.

They discovered an 18-inch machete, $3,200 in cash, a long steel pipe and a megaphone, according to the affidavit.

Prosecutors allege Hung illegally received the gun from a friend who bought it from Oregon claiming he had falsely bought it himself.

In March, Hung also bought at least three firearms he moved from Oregon to California, prosecutors said.

“Hung also amassed other firearms and tactical equipment from suppliers across the United States and used his family’s hold in Lodi, California, as an educational camp to prepare for civil unrest,” the affidavit says.

Hung was charged with a conspiracy charge to send firearms across state borders and make a fake by obtaining firearms. He can face up to five years in prison if convicted.

During his initial appearance, Hung was remanded in custody pending a hearing Monday about his state of bail, CBS San Francisco reported. It is scheduled to be pending on October 15.
