For Lucid, it’s about maximizing the power of the interior area, so that the car doesn’t grow too much on the outside.
The concept is that making the design this way means that the interior area is maximized to the length of the exterior of the vehicle. In addition, it also allows tons of storage. Lucid also says the Air will have the largest stripe of all electric vehicles, with a volume of 9.9 cubic feet.
Part of the explanation for why Lucid can do this is that he spent a lot of time and money miniaturizing his transmission. When you think a Tesla rear-wheel drive unit, a very dense force configuration, would actually be compatible with a fairly long suitcase (despite the weight), any kind of length relief would be impressive.
“It’s easy to achieve longer battery life by gradually adding more batteries, but earning a “stupid battery life” thus increases weight and cost, and reduces indoor space,” said Peter Rawlinson, CEO and CTO of Lucid Motors, in a statement. “Lucid Air achieved its remarkable diversity while reducing battery life with its internal technology, which led to a breakthrough in overall vehicle efficiency.”
All of this is pretty good and, as if Lucid could do it on a giant scale, it would be a big step forward for electric vehicles. We’ll know more about this and all the other major points of The Air in the September 9 online presentation.
