Longer Lasting Cars: Vehicles Likely to Last 250,000 Miles, New Study Finds

iSeeCars. com has just published its 2024 study on the most sustainable vehicles. This is the 11th year that the automotive site has been interested in vehicles with the longest lifespans, and since then it’s clear that modern vehicles last longer. Of course, they become so durable that iSeeCars had to adjust its definition of a sustainable car from 200,000 to 250,000 miles. Using this figure, the average car has an 8. 6% chance of driving a quarter of a million miles.

Toyota has owned this list for 11 years, so it’s no surprise to see its dominance, occupying seven of the top 10 most sensible spots (if it comes with the Lexus GX in the Toyota family). The Toyota Tundra has the best chance of achieving 250,000 miles, at 36. 6 percent. The Toyota Sequoia, 4Runner, Tacoma and Highlander Hybrid are all in places two through five, all with more than a 25% chance of reaching 250,000 miles.

A total of 10 Toyota/Lexus products give the automaker 30 percent of the top 30, with Honda/Acura in second place with seven models. Chevrolet, GMC and Nissan tied for third position with 3 models each, followed by Ford and Nissan with two models, and Mazda and Ram with one vehicle of their brand. More than a portion of the list (16 spots) are SUVs, followed by 8 pickup trucks, four sedans, 1 hatchback, and a minivan.

The importance of pickup trucks and SUVs illustrates the combination of flexible use and durability offered by those types of cars. People are simply doing more with pickup trucks and SUVs, expanding their mileage faster than traditional cars. This also means that it’s even more impressive that non-utility cars like the Toyota Avalon, Camry, and Prius, as well as the Honda Accord and Accord Hybrid, appear on this list as sedans or hatchbacks in the case of the Prius.

From a logo perspective, we see Toyota and Honda again in the lead, followed by Ram, GMC, Chevrolet, Lexus, and Ford, all with an above-average chance of reaching 250,000 miles. All sales of those logos are governed by trucks and/or SUVs, which helps them position themselves above average in the most sustainable style lines.

Heavy-duty trucks dominate the list of the most sustainable trucks

All of the above lists do not come with heavy-duty trucks, which are designed for heavy-duty and long-lasting use. These are corporate or fleet cars that do not reflect the customer’s tastes or usage. However, iSeeCars comes with heavy-duty models in the list ranking of the most sustainable pickup trucks, allowing those models to dominate the top 10. However, Toyota scores again with the non-heavy Tundra and Tacoma in the top 10, and Honda’s Ridgeline slips behind them in 11th. The bottom of the list is where the 1,500 pickups (or F-150s, in Ford’s case) appear.

This study also ranks the 20 smartest SUVs and 11 most durable sedans, and all models on either list have an above-average chance of covering 250,000 miles. See the full study in iSeeCars. com.
