A Lockport man faces a misdemeanor charge for striking the rear end of an Illinois State Police squad car who was assisting with lane closures near the scene of a crash, court records show.
On July 22, William Moyers, 56, of the 1300 block of East 159th Street was charged with reckless driving in connection with the incident, according to court records.
Moyers was also charged in the incident with driving under the influence, improper passing of an emergency vehicle, failure to reduce speed, operating an uninsured motor vehicle, improper traffic lane usage and changing lanes without a signal.
About 9 p.m. May 23, troopers were at the scene of a single vehicle traffic crash on Interstate 80 at the Des Plaines River Bridge, said Illinois State Trooper Elizabeth Clausing.
A trooper assisting with lane closures was seated inside his squad car with his emergency lights active about 1000 feet east of the crash scene, Clausing said. His squad car was struck in the rear by a 2001 Ford driving in the westbound lane on I-80, she said.
Moyers, the driver of the Ford, failed to yield to authorized emergency vehicles and he was arrested and released on his own recognizance, Clausing said.
She said there were no injuries from the crash.
“The ISP would like to remind the public of the requirements of Scott’s Law, otherwise known as the ‘Move Over’ law,” Clausing said. “When approaching an emergency vehicle, or any vehicle with their hazard lights activated, drivers are required to slow down and change lanes when it is safe to do so.”
