A local Civil War battlefield has reopened to the public.

The Sabine Pass Battlefield State Historic Site in Port Arthur reopened Thursday after being closed in the fall of 2022 for levee maintenance and other structural projects, according to a press from the Texas Historical Commission.

“Sabine Pass Battleground tells the story of Confederate Lieutenant Richard ‘Dick’ Dowling as his 46 men who thwarted a Union attack on Sabine Pass, the main port for Confederate expeditions of important materials during the war effort,” he said.
