“Light is the new chrome”: design of the new Volkswagen ID. 4

The ID. 4 has a strong and sporty character, but also friendly. The exterior plays a major role: it is an integral component of the concept of electric SUV design and presents the vehicle in a new way.

Until now, whenever automotive designers sought to draw attention to strengths, they used main points and chrome stripes, internal and external. For some years now, the trend has also shifted to new internal lighting elements of the vehicle, but especially outdoors. “Light is the new chrome,” explains Klaus Zyciora as design manager of the Volkswagen Group and former head of design for the Volkswagen brand. “Light plays a key role, especially for an electric vehicle. It represents energy and electricity, but also warmth and safety. Light is the best symbol of the mobility of the future. »

Zyciora and her team implemented this philosophy in ID. 4, creating a new design of unheard-of softness. The big gentlemen dominate the front of the electric SUV to give it a friendly look. They already have a lot of LED generation as standard. Tailgentle equipment has been fully equipped with light-emitting diodes and are connected to others by a red light strip. External mirror instances have a softer element: they hide logo allocators that assign a diamond-shaped trend, the typical design trend of models, on the floor when opening doors.

High technology through Volkswagen: IQ. Light Anyone who is also looking, I sure do not know what the IQ will be able to ask for in the future. Lighting option with LED matrix headlights. Its lighting modules consist of each of 11 individual LEDs, which can be turned off and varied separately, so they emit an uninterrupted and intelligently controlled road light, illuminating the road at all times in the brightest possible way without dazzling other road users.

The modules have a great resemblance to human eyes. Bright rings with a decreasing flattened component surround them, are the mark of identity. Models with IQ. Light. Honeycomb openings in module housings and fiber optic cables around the edge generate fire during sunlight hours. When the shielding devices are turned on, a soft strip passes through the front to attach the shielding accessories to others.

The lighting modules in the headlights speak with the driving force even before the ID. 4 embarks on a journey: every time the driving forces manipulate the vehicle with the key, the lighting devices turn electrically upwards from the rear to greet it to the top. . With the Keyless Advanced access formula on board, the vehicle presents an advanced welcome scenario: in this case, the lighting modules “open the eyes” and then turn more sideways, giving the impression that the vehicle is for a visual touch with the Driver technique.

Global innovation: optional 3-d LED taillights. In ID. 4, the Volkswagen logo uses 3-d LED rear LED equipment for the first time. Its rear bureaucracy is a flat curve and has a particularly homogeneous and bright effect. In this case, nine fiber optic cable surfaces emit an unusually intense soft red color. Each of these discs, composed of several thin layers, turns in front of a black background. Avoid smoothing accessories smoothly in the form of an “X”. “

Quick animations on soft accessories start from the logo to greet drivers and say goodbye. Customers can transfer between two design modes. 3-d LED taillight groups also incorporate a dynamic turn signal: it moves from the inside out to obviously indicate which direction the vehicle is headed. Klaus Zyciora goes on to say that “the soft in ID. 4 is not a finish in itself. It cleverly plays important purposes and is an integral detail of external design.

Electrically in the future. Volkswagen’s power offensive accelerates with the new ID. 301 and ID. 4 models: the ID. 3 is introduced in major European markets. The world premiere of ID. 4, which will now be present in the burgeoning compact SUV. segment, will take position on September 23. The first cars will be delivered before the end of this year.

Volkswagen underscores its ambitions to be the world leader in the electric mobility market. In the end, the Group will invest around 33 billion euros by 2024, only 11 billion euros in the Volkswagen brand. In Germany, the Zwickau site will be the largest and toughest. The electric vehicle plant in Europe, taking a pioneering role in transforming Volkswagen’s global production network. Preparations for the launch of the E-SUV are also in full motion abroad. Pre-production has already begun at China’s Anting plant and production of ID. 4 on the Chattanooga site in the United States will be introduced in 2022.
