Lewis Hamilton says it would be “surprising” if Ferrari signed Adrian Newey after he left Red Bull at the start of 2025.
Newey, considered F1’s biggest car designer, will be able to sign up for another team from April 2025 after negotiating an exit from Red Bull.
Sky Sports News understands that Newey had a meeting with a Ferrari representative last week. Newey is very keen on moving to Ferrari, despite a lucrative offer from Aston Martin.
If Newey were to sign up for the Scuderia, he would race with Hamilton, who signed a multi-year contract to sign up for Ferrari from 2025.
“Adrian has a wonderful story and track record. It is evident that he has done an incredible job in his career and has been committed to the teams and the wisdom that he has. I think he would be a wonderful addition,” said Hamilton.
“Ferrari already has a wonderful team. They’re already making massive progress and their car is faster this year. “
“It would be a privilege to paint with him [Newey]. “
Asked how much he would like to see Newey sign for Ferrari, Hamilton added: “A lot. “
Newey is keenly interested in F1 teams, having built 14 championship-winning cars at Williams and McLaren in the 1990s and then at Red Bull over the past 15 years.
The 65-year-old is also accustomed to regulatory changes, adding a primary overhaul of F1 regulations in 2026.
Hamilton declined to say whether Newey’s move to Ferrari was part of his decision to leave Mercedes later this year and move to the famed red F1 team.
“If I had to make a list of other people I’d like to paint with, I’d probably be at the top,” said Hamilton, who is having his worst start to an F1 season ahead of this weekend’s Miami Grand Prix. .
Hamilton began his F1 career in 2007 at McLaren, a year after Newey left the team to join Red Bull.
The seven-time world champion spoke about Newey’s effect on McLaren, which he has yet to work with.
“When I joined McLaren [in 2007], it was an evolution of their car. I arrived right after he left and this car evolved from a concept he worked on. So I felt privileged to be able to drive anything he’s been racing. go ahead,” he explained.
“Racing against a team he’s been a member of over the years has been a huge challenge. But I think we also have to know that there are a lot of other people behind it. “
“It’s not just one person, it’s a total team of people doing the work. You can believe that despite all the incredible pleasure he brings to the team, the other people he works with will continue to do amazing work. “work.
“I don’t expect Red Bull to continue to make wonderful cars, but any team would be lucky enough to have the opportunity to work with it.
Hamilton is in the middle of a situation where he knows he will leave Mercedes to join Ferrari.
The 39-year-old has not won a race since December 2021 and this year he overtook Mercedes team-mate George Russell.
He has been facing questions from the media about Ferrari since the start of the season and revealed that he has been in “regular” talks with Ferrari president John Elkann and team principal Frederic Vasseur.
“I’ve never been on this stage before, so it’s an exclusive stage. On the one hand, I’m excited to come and paint with my guys and at the same time I’m excited for the future. “Hamilton said.
“In terms of the reaction from the fans, it’s been wonderful because I’m mixing with the fans from both teams. At the moment, my center is still in Mercedes and IArray needs to continue delivering and elevating them. It’s not just my job, but my preference this year.
“Even though it’s been difficult, we’re still united and I’m proud of all the people I paint with. And I hope that with the year it will be bigger. Needless to say, it’s not possible. But I think we’re going to be older.
