While the current economic scenario is terrible, Melbourne’s transport company, Lawson Sideloader Services, is expected to perform better in the pandemic.
Specialist in the shipment of boxes in the city of Melbourne, the company is in a national expansion, having recently opened operations in Sydney and Brisbane.
Founder and chief executive David Eroglu is proud of his team and says many have worked tirelessly to help move to Sydney’s 8,000-square-meter facility in April, which were originally scheduled to open in February.
“We delayed it because of the virus. It was going to get worse before it got better, so we thought we had to because we had a lot of prefabricated equipment,” says Eroglu.
“At Lawson Sideloader Services, we are operational and grow with confidence.”
With 4 warehouses in Melbourne, the company operates all-day operations throughout the CBD and southeastern suburbs, carrying more than 60,000 boxes a year.
Eager to do things differently, Eroglu uses multiple containers for long and small distances, side loader and skel for short distances, saving time and money.
First in offering this system, its approach is still effective, as it allows drivers to retrieve shipping boxes from the terminals, which are then loaded into a side loader or skel in a smaller container and delivered to the final destination.
Founded in 1999, Lawson Sideloader Services was born with the vision of providing the most productive competitive truck services.
Since then, it has been offering consumers the most productive transportation service and prices in the country.
The company provides a variety of services, adding sideloading, skel and off-size services. In addition, Lawson operates a fleet of dual-steer-looking loaders that can weigh particularly more than its competitors.
It also supplies backyard storage, handling 1,500 boxes at any given time, as well as fumigation and sub-sublace services.
The company’s expansion continues as it is about to obtain 25 new trailers from manufacturer MaxiTrans.
A date that began five years ago, Eroglu describes MaxiTrans’s device as reliable and affordable.
“We are very proud of our partnership with MaxiTrans; we’ve been users of MaxiTrans trailers for five years and we’re on a winning streak with them,” says Eroglu.
“For our Super B, A-doubles and B-doubles, we opted for the sending of MaxiTrans – they helped with PBS [Performance Based Systems] and with the permissions, and we had no drama.
“Due to the gap between the opening hours of the dock terminals and the final destination, it has been the duty of the carrier in recent years to provide a re-release depot so that visitors’ requests can be fulfilled in a timely manner.
“To manage volumes and meet visitor demands, we use multiple-combination cars for all of our dock movements.
“These cars also keep our toll prices to a minimum, savings are transferred to our customers.
“We had to go through PBS with the double trucks; it’s a domain where we knew we had to worry but we didn’t know what to do. What we discovered was that MaxiTrans was able to come to the rescue with a solution for us… Not only did they provide us with a very smart trailer at a competitive price, but they were also able to take care of everything for us and get on our way.”
With a hundred trucks, Lawson’s fleet consists of Volvo and Mercedes.
Eroglu says Volvo has been “a good spouse worthy of trust with reliable trucks,” which has achieved remarkable functionality over the years.
With a hundred drivers, part of which are subbies, the company has six super B-doubles, 30 A-doubles, five B-doubles, 40 sideloaders adding heavyweights, mini lifters and 60 skels.
It upgrades its fleet every six to seven years and trailers every eight years.
With a very low turnover, the company keeps its drivers being very inclusive with them and offering them a well-maintained team, explains Eroglu.
“Being a progressive and guilty company, we have been helping our drivers be there for them and proposing their work; to exercise them and treat them with the utmost respect,” he says.
“We work hard to provide our entire team with a pleasant running environment.”
The company has embarked on an expansion path for more than seven years.
“We had a program and we sticked to that program,” Eroglu says.
An expansion to be offering your home consumers brand directly at other ports. This is undoubtedly an ambitious resolution in the existing economic climate.
The Sydney plant has been under construction for 18 months, basically due to the fact that many consumers are for national service, the company’s national sales manager, Anthony Comino, said.
“Our business has grown significantly thanks to some very genuine real estate games we’ve had.
“Lately we operate from 4 warehouses in Melbourne, all in strategically vital commercial areas: Tottenham, Tullamarine, Dandenong and Somerton. The Somerton site will be an intermodal terminal once the dock rail link is completed.
“It’s basically in the last 12 months, due to the constant stress of consumers that couldn’t be served in Sydney or Brisbane, they were looking for a domestic offer, so we’re offering it to them.”
The company has purchased 10 looking loaders in the last year and about 30 skel trailers, as well as 8 main engines and five A.A. doubles.
The guiding concept of the corporate has been “Build it and they will come”, with a plan to be strategically endowed in commercial areas.
“This new device that is coming is to manage additional growth,” says Comino.
“Yes, it’s a threat, but it’s a threat that is mitigated by continually providing our consumers with a more advanced service with greater IT capabilities.
“The offer of multiple deposits we bring it to the industry more than anything else – no one else has 4 deposits, some corporations have two but no one has 4.”
“We’ve had the philosophy of building it and they’re going to come, rather than waiting for it to come and worry, that’s not our plan.
“Our plan is to offer a very competitive rate with devices capable of handling the task, and that has worked for us for more than two years.
“Most of our expansion has been a new business: carriers communicate with us and with several delivery points,” he adds.
“What it’s about is our service is our top IT point and our warehouses strategically located in the right business locations.”
The company uses a complex control formula in its deposits, available to drivers on their iPad.
“Our IT is very close to the customer,” says Comino.
“Delivery problems are on the screen and the importer or carrier receives an automatic confirmation from the POD [proof of delivery].
“Our PC formula integrates seamlessly with some of the major IT platforms for forwarders, making trading with Lawson much easier, no access to knowledge at the moment.
“The IT platform we use is evolving, there’s a team of knowledge writers who are updating it, and we’re very proud to be at the forefront of this.”
Like many operators, Lawson has experienced a slowdown in their business for more than two months due to customer confidence.
“There is no doubt that the virus has had an effect on the logistics industry and we are not immune. However, through all of this, we continued to operate safely, with caution, as we headed to our community.” Comino said.
The company retained all its staff and was able to ensure its protection through groups such as accounting and sales, house painting and workplace operations.
“They are all very well separated and, for our customers, all our drivers have iPads with a connection screen for deliveries, and the driver, when he delivers the container, makes symptoms of the screen himself so as not to want to leave. the customer,” he adds.
The company takes pride in dating stevedores and says it has fostered a relationship of mutual respect.
“We have fostered these relationships by treating them with the utmost respect at all times and asking them for favors at all times; treating them with mutual respect and complying with all the rules we receive from them,” says Comino.
“Our pictorial culture is very oriented to the circle of family members; here they are all treated as members of the circle of relatives, so we have a very low turnover rate.
“We are very proud of the devices we offer. These are vehicles, usually Euro 5 or 6 vehicles. As far as our drivers are concerned, they are well paid above the price.
“We are very inclusive with our drivers, we are very close to them, even if they paint remotely in our offices.”
Here, in the long run, Lawson Sideloader Services provides a cost-effective dock transportation solution on the East Coast.
